I recently slid over a container of THC lotion to my grandma in a brown paper bag in a booth at a local coney island. You already know we're trying to spin 9/10 (National Grandparents Day) on its head this year. Here are the details: On September 10th, it's your turn to introduce them to a page from your respective book. Bring them to the dispo / provisioning center with you. Show them how navigating this world can be as easy as picking up a prescription from Costco Wholesale. It's not just about the high- there are an infinite amount of non-psychoactive options that can be introduced seamlessly into their lives. They're just going to go online and buy Dr. Oz CBD cream in secrecy otherwise. And if they've ever cast a curious eye towards what you or others might be enjoying weed-wise, this is a deliberate moment for clarity and understanding (selfishly, teach them "how to fish" for a future where they, on their own, decide to gift you some cannabis instead of a scripted amount on a gift card for special occasions). We're onto something much bigger than ourselves here. This movement is a freshly-penned love letter for current, older generations. And the brands and groups leaning into it are really tapping into this previously cast-aside demographic and are seeing significant results. It might feel like we're packing 10 lbs into a 5 lb bag this debut year, and trust me, WE ARE. That doesn't take away from all the hard work local dispensaries and provisioning centers are doing by leaning into their at-large communities and making the effort on this day. P.S. On the current leg of my MI road trip, I am asking every single licensed retailer "what do I get as a first time buyer?" and it is overwhelmingly "a pre-roll." Lot of work to be done not just putting the squeeze on your current shoppers / consumers / patients and offering a more representative menu of options to welcome more first time customers.
