Sustainable Development Goal 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions is a cornerstone for achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, governance systems are failing many people. The world is becoming more dangerous, people are increasingly divided, and justice is being denied for too many. But there are some bright spots. Our latest publication aims to shed light on these bright spots where we are working hand in hand with partners. It showcases the policies, activities, and initiatives of 16 countries framed through the 3 pillars of SDG 16 together with examples of best practices. The report notes the positive trend in the diversity of representation in public institutions, with more gender parity in some regions and improvements in the inclusion of young people. Governments are also increasingly prioritizing policies and initiatives which are making real and crucial progress on peace, justice and inclusion. Our hope is that this compilation will serve as inspiration for policymakers, civil society and practitioners in designing the responses that are needed to refocus efforts, accelerate and deepen implementation of Goal 16. #IndigenousPeoples are custodians of unique knowledge systems, innovations and practices that have been passed down through generations and have allowed different cultures and communities in many parts of the world to live sustainably, emphasizing the balance between humans and the natural world. They manage 25% of the world’s land, safeguarding biodiversity and carbon sinks. And provide environmental stewardship to at least 36% of the world’s intact forests. Their traditional knowledge is crucial for effective climate policies and conservation efforts. Yet, due to historical marginalization and political and economic power imbalances, Indigenous peoples have often been overlooked as key agents of change.
