The Uncle Waithley’s Crew always brings the vibe. Last week, we debuted our Roots & Revelations concept at Bitter Monk in Brooklyn's Industry City post Bar Convent Brooklyn. Roots & Revelations is our immersive Drink Heritage Workshop and Bartender Training series. Our Founder Karl Franz Williams shared the history of ginger beer, Caribbean culture’s impact on Beverage, and his family heritage. Karl, alongside his wife Valerie 🇯🇲🇨🇳 and cousin Burton from St. Vincent 🇻🇨, discussed ginger beer’s special role in their Caribbean upbringing. As a Black founder raising money, I'm faced with a daunting task. We at Uncle Waithleys Beverage Company have the team, the pedigree, the experience, and the traction. But there is a bigger problem. Funding for Black founders is trending in the wrong direction. VC funding was at 1.3% in 2021, dropped to 1% in 2022, and landed at an abysmal 0.48% in 2023. I'm excited to dig into what's happening here and more importantly to argue for the business case of why this a bad trend for the overall CPG industry, not just for Black founders.
