Thank you to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Patra Wroten for the AIA Architect article on my recent grand-prize winning submission for the AIA24 Designing Together Contest, "A Bi-National Park for Ambos Nogales." Winning the grand-prize afforded me the opportunity to attend the AIA24 National Conference in Washington, D.C. where I had the chance to meet and learn from fellow impassioned professionals from across the country in the AEC industry. Congratulations to my fellow finalists. Associate Professor Ladd Keith talks about the vital research aimed at improving heat resiliency for our local communities. For six days, the Southwest Urban Corridor Integrated Field Laboratory, known as the SW-IFL, conducted field research in collaboration with the Brookhaven National Laboratory to better understand how extreme heat affects communities across the Southwest. "The goal with this project is to do science that improves the resilience of communities in our state to increasing heat. The University of Arizona's role in this partnership is critical because we have the expertise of working with community partners and translating that science into action that communities can use to make better decisions." They have already begun their summer immersion courses, tackling fundamental architectonic problems and getting oriented to the unique challenges of the Sonoran desert. Collaborative efforts from City of Tucson leadership and staff, community stakeholders, and University of Arizona faculty to address escalating heat challenges have resulted in the adoption of a newly crafted Heat Action Roadmap and Heat Protection Ordinance for city workers and contractors. Congratulations to the Sentinel Suns team for winning the 2024 Bank of America Low-Income Housing Challenge! The annual competition brings together university students from around the country to create forward-looking and feasible projects addressing all aspects of affordable housing development, including community needs, building design, and financing. The winning team comprised University of Arizona architecture students Riley Cost, Souhayla Farag, Joshua Gonzalez, Louis Narcisi, Cameron Noble, Sasha Terpilovskaya, and Alyssa Fink. Jacob Schaffer, a master of real estate student, provided real estate expertise for the team. The second finalist team, called Sonoran Horizon Development, comprised architecture students Maddie Dacumos, Sheyda Maadelat, Jacqueline Maldonado, Alexis Moreno, and Emma Thompson. Isaiah Mays, a Master of Real Estate student, was also on the team. This year was also the first time two teams from the same college advanced to the finals. CAPLA Associate Professor Ladd Keith sits down with Doug Parsons from American Adapts to discuss the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration funding the new Center for Heat Resilient Communities. Dr. Keith is joined by V. Kelly Turner from UCLA. "I think one of the exciting things is we'll be co-developing this heat resilient framework with the communities that we're working with...but we'll also be putting a lot of that information on heat.gov so that it's accessible to all of the other 19,000 communities in the United States. And another part of it that's really exciting is all of the lessons that we're going to learn through the center is feeding that back to federal agencies and really partnering with them so they know how to better support community heat planning as well." https://lnkd.in/gm4yzGDz
