Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.
About us
For more than eight decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to more than 9 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 155 local power companies and 57 directly served industries and federal facilities. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

Months of extremes! May was wet, with an average of 7.32 inches of rainfall across the Tennessee River Valley. That's 170% of normal and the most rain in May since 2003. However, June turned hot and dry, with only an average of 2.59 inches of rain, which is only 60% of normal. The good news is that all that rain in May helped our dams produce over 2,000-gigawatt hours of clean energy.

Teamwork at its finest! This past week, Gallatin Fossil Plant had several boiler tube leaks. Our highly skilled Gallatin maintenance welders and the Regional Maintenance team joined forces to tackle the repairs in sweltering heat. Thanks to their hard work, the generating unit was quickly returned to service ahead of schedule. Huge shoutout to our dedicated employees for keeping the power flowing during these hot summer days! 💪 #Teamwork

Melton Hill Dam on the Clinch River near Oak Ridge, TN, was built over 60 years ago and is full of many firsts! It was the first dam built for commercial navigation since the completion of the Kentucky Dam in 1944 and the first with a lock on a tributary river. Today, the dam is home to the first sustainable recreation area featuring a clean, net-zero-energy campground highlighting our energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation measures! #TBT

Here is a unique look at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant's Unit 1 control room. Reactor operators closely monitor it to ensure continued safe and reliable operations during this heatwave. Nuclear, hydro, natural gas, renewables, and coal all work together to keep the lights on and those AC units humming! #Heatwave #NuclearEnergy
