In this significant year, we continue to keep Ziya Abi's (elder brother, as he was fondly known by his mentees) vision and entrepreneurial spirit alive. He was an inspiration to the establishment of the Turkish Entrepreneurship Foundation, one of the founding members of TPF's Founders Society, and a former TPF board member. The Sena Eken Schieber Economics Awards was established in 2015 by George Schieber to honor his late wife, Sena Eken Schieber, an aspiring economist who made a mark in the field of Economics. Created uniquely for female students specializing in Economics, the award supports their graduate studies journey in the United States at high-ranking universities. Just as George envisioned, 19 young women are following in Sena’s footsteps as future economists, striving to be the best in their fields since the award's establishment. While awardees have continued their careers in Economics since graduation, each and every one of them is motivated to make their mark in their fields. We’re delighted to announce the 2024 Sena Eken Schieber Scholarship recipients: Ayse Nur Battal, Kardelen Cicek, and Dilsu Tanal. After the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey last year, we collaborated with 76 partner organizations and disbursed $14.5 million in grants. Together, we've impacted over 1.8 million people with one mission: to heal, rebuild, and plan for a resilient and thriving future in the earthquake region. On May 14th, we gathered with our partners to discuss ongoing needs and explore how we can maximize our long-term impact. For many, it was their first time meeting in person, while others strengthened existing connections. But, Everyone brought their full dedication to a day marked by collaboration and unity, focused on nurturing our communities and revitalizing hope. Sharing our experiences and insights have been invaluable in driving our mission forward. And, it was inspiring to witness the power of collective efforts. In Türkiye, one out of four university graduates faces the challenge of unemployment. For those from second-tier universities in Anatolian cities, the struggle is even greater, often leading to unemployment for an average of 15 months. Esas Sosyal is turning the tide through an inspiring youth employment initiative: the English Chance Program. This one-year program provides students with critical English language skills and career management training, dramatically enhancing their employability and future prospects. Since 2021, the English Chance Program has embraced 1,100 graduates from 81 cities across Türkiye.
