This is one of the questions we asked participants at the NorthStar Youth Outreach Center to learn more about the youth who visit, their hopes, dreams, and visions for the future. Tubman staff love their pets, and we can't think of a better way to honor our furry family members than by opening the Twin Cities' first pet-friendly domestic violence shelter, Harriet's Haven for Pets! Last month we broke ground at our Maplewood location and can't wait for construction to begin so people seeking safe shelter won't have to make the choice to leave their pet behind. Happy Monday! We want to give a special thanks to UnitedHealthcare of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, for Tubman’s Movement for Violence Prevention program in middle schools and high schools across the Twin Cities Metro. Our Movement for Violence Prevention program, or MVP, helps youth organize around violence prevention and healthy relationships. In 2023, more than 3,700 students participated in MVP's in-school curriculum or attended a presentation on healthy relationships or violence prevention. Thanks United Healthcare for helping us continue this amazing program!

August 1 marked the beginning of the 31st annual Minnesota Fringe Festival! Opening the festival, yesterday, was "Looking for Justice (in all the wrong places)," a show written and performed by Amy Oppenheimer. "Looking for Justice" is a compelling narrative that follows the Oppenheimer's personal journey from a 19-year-old college dropout searching for identity to becoming a lawyer and eventually a judge. The show explores critical issues of sexual and racial justice, inspired by the performer's experience of accompanying a friend to a rape trial in 1970. Running through August 11, proceeds of "Looking to Justice" performances will be donated to Tubman! Visit minnesotafringe.org to learn more and purchase tickets.

Yesterday, we welcomed volunteers from the Pohlad Family Foundation through HandsOn Twin Cities to Harriet Tubman Center East! Thank you for helping us organize and clean some of the most-used spaces at East!

As parents, friends, mentors, and community members, we may find ourselves encouraging the young people in our lives to work hard, go after their dreams, stay positive and design the life they want. What we often lack are strategies to support them in doing that, and the understanding that not every person is supplied with the same resources to do so. Enter "The 5Cs of Positive Youth Development" (plus a bonus C that was added in 2007). This model of positive youth development goes beyond the focus of individual strength development. It also supports meaningful connection and communication between young people and their social-community resources, further creating impactful relationships within their community.
