Moving workplace trust from “maybe” to measurable to maximized. Founder. CEO. Consultant. Executive Coach. Teacher. Speaker. Author of book: Closing the Trust Gap.

A clumsy Thanksgiving day fall, a deep cut on my thumb with lots of blood, and a nasty infection 24 hours later that made my whole hand become inflamed... 72 hours after my stumble I found myself in the sterile office of our local Urgent Care. I arrived 10 minutes prior to the 8am opening in order to avoid the long wait time. As I waited for the doors to open, I was: - frustrated at myself for the stumble - worried about how quickly the infection had spread - anxious about what was the root cause of this medical inconvenience - not looking forward to the recovery process As I was welcomed into the exam room, I read the look on the nurses face as I took the gauze off of my wound...her look of concern as I showed her my thumb signaled to me that this was a serious infection that needed to be taken care of. She immediately ordered an x-ray that thankfully turned out to be inconsequential. While I was waiting for the Nurse Practitioner, my eyes became fixed on the biohazard trash can in the corner of the exam room. I talk about the symbol in my book....how the gaps are what make the symbol strikingly different from a more optimal image of a venn diagram. The gaps in the circle represent a breakdown of a system...a danger to the environment....an object to be avoided. Toxic. A knock at the door and the Nurse Practitioner came in. She demonstrated each building block of trust completely. - COMPETENCY: Her level of competence was incredible...not just medical, but also her communication. Focused. Clear. Actionable. - PROBLEM SOLVING: She immediately identified the problem with my thumb...a raging infection that if left unchecked would result in an ER visit within 24 hours. She then developed a clear plan to solve the problem which included a heavy dose of antibiotics. - CARE FOR OTHERS: Her empathy for my situation was incredible. I felt like the only patient in the clinic...almost as if I was a part of her family. Her listening skills, human-centered questions, and transparency about the plan of care were incredible. Trustworthy. I sit here today....two days later. No trip to the ER, the swelling has gone down substantially in my thumb, and my range of motion is beginning to return. I sit here today incredibly grateful. Toxic to Trustworthy. Trust is everything....especially when it's personal.

Moving workplace trust from “maybe” to measurable to maximized. Founder. CEO. Consultant. Executive Coach. Teacher. Speaker. Author of book: Closing the Trust Gap.

Trust is a human value... "Trust is a human value and it exists in every relationship. Trust is the fuel for the engine of positive relationships and productive teams. Trust is a universal truth that is foundational for culture at large, as well as every organization. Yet trust, despite its inarguable benefits and infinite potential, is often illusive, and organizations commonly behave in such a way that trust is not achievable. It's one thing to talk about trust. It's something entirely different to have the courage to identify gaps and strengthen trust." Excerpt from Closing the Trust Gap: Taking Action on What Matters Most for Leaders, Teams, and Organizations (pre-release at www.TrustGapBook.com --- available on Amazon December 1)

Moving workplace trust from “maybe” to measurable to maximized. Founder. CEO. Consultant. Executive Coach. Teacher. Speaker. Author of book: Closing the Trust Gap.

"I missed my calling..." The words stung as they were shared with me in a random interaction with a stranger a few weeks ago. The scene is a familiar one: - 7:30am in a hotel lobby in a new city - yogurt cups, plastic bins of bread for toast, large canisters of coffee - small boxes of raisin bran and other assorted cereals - the industrial strength self-serve waffle makers that you only see in hotels There was an elderly gentleman sitting in the corner by himself. He wasn't eating and seemed to be either tired or not feeling well. I noticed him as I settled in to eat my continental breakfast. I then felt movement behind me and to my left. The night shift manager for the hotel walked past me and went to the man sitting at the table in the corner. - She knelt down - She looked at him in the eyes - She put her hand gently on his shoulders - She asked him if he was ok - She gave him a cup of water and continued to ask helpful questions My attention turned away from my breakfast, towards this incredibly kind act from the night shift manager. He ultimately was ok, but there were a few moments of concern. As she was walking back to the lobby counter, I smiled at her and said, "What you just did was wonderful. Thank you for how you cared for him." She paused, smiled, thanked me, and I continued my encouragement. "Have you ever thought about pursuing a career in nursing?" Her smile got bigger and she said, "You're the third person who has asked me that in the last several weeks!" "But..." I said, "But what?" She said, "I missed my calling..." I said, "I don't believe you've missed your calling. Maybe you are currently being affirmed in how your calling will eventually be lived out." We continued the conversation and I encouraged to take the first couple of steps towards living out the calling she is sensing she needs to pursue. If you are in place where you feel like you've missed your calling...be encouraged...maybe you are in just in a season of preparation. The key is to take the next best step towards that calling. Wade in, surround yourself with trusted advisors, don't wait.

I'm deeply grateful for Jennifer Glover (Developmental Editor) and Andrew Blackburn (Copy Editor) for their help every step of the way! I'm also so grateful for Justin Ricklefs for his willingness to write the foreword to the book. If you are interested in the special pre-release version of the book, go to www.TrustGapBook.com ABOUT THE BOOK: No matter the industry or level of leadership, most people share a collective, honest desire to be a part of an organization with a high level of trust. They dream of a place free of destructive drama, where productivity and progress soar under the banner of genuine positivity. Closing the Trust Gap is designed to provide you with a clear understanding of the chasms in trust that currently plague all industries and have significant implications for the work you do, the teams you lead, and the organizations in which you serve. This book has the power to help you transform trust from something that is commonly illusive to something that becomes tactical, tangible, and transformational. The current troubling condition of trust is a clarion call to action. But despite the dismal data showing pervasive organizational distrust, every organization has the opportunity to assess their current level of trust, learn and adopt a proven trust building framework, and then develop a meaningful and long-lasting plan of action. This book will be an invaluable resource for you, your team, and your organization to improve employee retention, increase productivity, and strengthen workplace culture as a result of closing the trust gap.

I’m dipping my toes in the deep and wondrous waters of AI. I have SO much to learn about this incredible technology and I asked it for some some help. Since problem solving has been proven to be a critical building block of trust, I asked AI to provide me a list of ten common business problems that companies are regularly facing. Do any (or all) of these resonate with your current reality? 1. Cash flow management 2. Employee retention and talent acquisition 3. Increasing competition 4. Customer satisfaction and retention 5. Operational inefficiencies 6. Technology integration 7. Marketing and sales effectiveness 8. Regulatory compliance 9. Risk management 10. Scaling and expansion. What other problems would you add to the list?
