🌍 A staggering 67% of global #deforestation due to agriculture is for animal feed and pasture. This massive impact on our forests threatens biodiversity and accelerates climate change. In our recent report on #AgTech For Biodiversity Conservation in partnership with Superorganism, we emphasize the ecosystem destruction caused by agricultural land expansion and explore sustainable strategies that can help mitigate this crisis. From adopting on-farm innovation to advancing new protein production methods, actionable AgTech solutions exist that can make a difference. Join us in rethinking our land use practices and taking steps toward a more sustainable future. Together, we can protect our planet and preserve its precious biodiversity. 🌳✨ Learn more --> https://bit.ly/3RXnvuA #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity #SDGs #ClimateAction   Data Source: Poore, J. & Nemecek, T. Can we nourish 10 billion people while restoring the Earth? Last week, we attended the TED Conferences #TedCountdown event focused on The Future of Food addressing this question. This two-day gathering underscored the critical importance of collaboration as we reshape our food systems to ensure a sustainable future. We were thrilled to be able to contribute by hosting a Breakthrough Session “Harnessing AgTech for Biodiversity Conservation” presented by our Founder, Sarah Garland, PhD, and Triple Helix Advisory Team member, Matthew Hayek, PhD. This session emphasized the vital role of #AgTech in producing enough food for a growing population while preserving biodiversity.  Attendees of the conference also embarked on group excursions to pioneering local New York City initiatives at the forefront of food and agriculture production. We helped organize a visit to C16 Biosciences, a company using precision fermentation to create an alternative to palm oil, a product that is currently responsible for 80% of land use conversion  in Southeast Asia.  For a conference about food, what did we eat? The conference featured a remarkable dinner titled “The Last Supper,” curated by Chef Sam Kass, which showcased foods at risk of disappearing due to climate change like shellfish, wine, wheat, coffee, and chocolate. For lunch we were able to try cultivated chicken from UPSIDE Foods and a variety of impressive vegan cheeses from Climax Foods. Thank you TED Conferences for highlighting the crucial role of food systems for tackling climate change and providing a platform for thoughtful discourse. #Agriculture #FoodSystems #SDG2 #ClimateChange

World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Agriculture is a major component of each of these themes. 🌿 🌱 Did you know 1/3 of the world’s soil is degraded, largely due to unsustainable agricultural practices? 🚰 #Agriculture uses 70% of global freshwater, often exceeding responsible levels. The Colorado River, for instance, now struggles to reach the sea due to overuse. We can protect and revive diverse ecosystems by embracing innovative solutions and collaborating to achieve urgent goals. We can be the generation that restores environmental balance. Today is the International Day of Biodiversity and to mark the occasion we are thrilled to launch our report 🌱AgTech for Biodiversity Conservation 🌍 in collaboration with Superorganism, the first venture capital firm dedicated to biodiversity. Our new report outlines key ways #AgTech can play a direct role in tackling the main causes of biodiversity loss from #agriculture: land use conversion, pollution, and overexploitation of natural resources. With only 13% of original wetlands left and 32 million hectares of tropical forests lost between 2010-2015, urgent action is needed. Did you know that 25% of monitored species today are at risk of extinction? From curbing tropical deforestation by reducing agricultural land use to preserving aquatic ecosystems by decreasing eutrophication, AgTech solutions can help protect #biodiversity and foster more sustainable agricultural production systems. 🌿 Download the full report here --> https://bit.ly/4cmhQ9h #BuildBackBiodiversity #ClimateAction #PartOfThePlan

Congratulations to Dr. Geoff Hawtin and Dr. Cary Fowler on being selected as the 2024 World Food Prize Foundation Laureates! As leading experts in their field, they have shaped the global system for protecting, sharing, and utilizing crop genetic diversity. Their achievements are vast and include establishing the largest library of crop genetic diversity, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which stores 1.25 million samples from around the world! In the face of increasing jeopardization of crops due to climate change, efforts to preserve and research crop genetic diversity are essential for safeguarding the future of food for generations to come.    Join us in celebrating Dr. Hawtin and Dr. Fowler’s monumental achievements in agriculture and conservation. Last week, Triple Helix held a launch event for Michael Sheldrick's new book "From Ideas to Impact: A Playbook for Influencing and Implementing Change in a Divided World." Our discussion framed the book's key takeaways about policy entrepreneurship in the context of fostering innovation in #agriculture that supports both people and planet. I've known Mick for about a year now, and I always enjoy our conversations because he knows how to cut through the noise to support ideas that truly make a difference. With one week until #EarthDay, this is the perfect book to inspire how to take #climateaction. Sign up for the Triple Helix newsletter to participate in our next event! https://lnkd.in/ecWqkPjn Thanks to our venue sponsor IndieBio and to Yolélé and Brooklyn Brewery for refreshments!

January 2024 was full of meaningful programming and connections for me and Triple Helix. On the road in Austin, TX, Triple Helix co-hosted a workshop at World Logic Day on #AgTech and the role of logic in the future of agriculture. Thank you to amazing partners Olivia Dell and Chelsea Toler for a successful event! 🌱 🌎 Back in NYC, I enjoyed speaking about Transforming our Food System on a thoughtful panel organized by Jeannette Williams and Thomas Guest. I hope that the commitment to collaborative action that I experienced in January continues throughout the year! The Cometa Collective | Logictry | Urban Future Lab | Brym
