  • July 20 is Canada’s Parks Day, a day to celebrate the vital role our parks play in conservation and community well-being! 🌲🏞️ Among the people caring for Canada’s parks is Kelly Pineault ’97 (Traill College), who co-manages 10,700 km2 of pristine landscape with the Innu and Inuit of Labrador for the Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve. Kelly is the acting park superintendent and works to advance Parks Canada’s priority of reconciliation and the strengthening, restoration, and assertion of Indigenous connections to the land. “I get to contribute daily, in small but hopefully meaningful ways, in ensuring that Parks Canada places are where Indigenous voices, leadership, practices, traditions, stories, and ways of knowing, are integral to the approach of natural and cultural heritage conservation practices,” she says. Kelly’s work aligns perfectly with the values instilled in her while at Trent University, values that have helped shape her worldview and commitment to being an ally. Happy Canada’s Parks Day! How did you celebrate?
