Lillian Safran Shaked has likely worked on more patent deals than anyone else. She may keep a low profile, but is squarely one of the who’s who of patent monetization along with last week’s guest Erich Spangenberg. In fact, she’s Erich’s lawyer. Her episode offered up a treasure trove of advice on how to get patent deals done over and over again, such as: - Move fast so momentum doesn’t drop. That means daily touchpoints and turnarounds, and always setting up the next call during the current one. (Why Erich considers Lillian one of the best he’s worked with.) - Win-win patent deals exist. Both parties want to strike a deal, and the faster the better for everyone. - Assume you will work with a player again. Licensing is about maintaining relationships, not getting every last cent. Tune in for more insights like these on patent monetization and additional topics. How great was our VP of Strategy Justin’s recent post sharing 3 highly practical suggestions for thinking like an inventor — and upping inventor engagement? Tradespace isn’t just a disclosure portal, it’s an inventor collaboration tool: -We cut the time it takes to submit a disclosure to under 15 minutes using existing materials in any format, turning it into something your inventors actually want to use - Our AI creates materials that help you communicate your patenting decision for you so you can close the loop and bring your inventors along See how easy our platform makes it in these 1-minute videos: Disclosure creation - https://lnkd.in/ePpP_SNX Disclosure evaluation - https://lnkd.in/eBNMCkzS #intellectualproperty #inventorengagement #inventiondisclosure

The innovation to IP process is “far more nuanced” than corporate innovation models acknowledge, say Colleen Chien and Jillian Grennan of UC Berkeley in their recent paper (find it here: https://lnkd.in/gQFaJUEb) In my view, better appreciating 3 nuances can help improve inventor engagement and increase disclosure volume, as I write about in my latest blog post. Nuance 1: Invention is an ongoing process, so invention disclosure should be too. Instead of asking inventors to fill out massive forms, keep things simple at the beginning so your inventors will bite. Nuance 2: Inventors are often unimpressed with their own inventions — remind them that what’s obvious to them is a breakthrough for others. Inventors know they should submit when they invent, but might have different ideas about what counts as an invention. Nuance 3: Different inventors need different education, and you’ll have a bigger impact if you target the right ones. Focus your education efforts on the inventors who are closest to the company’s R&D priorities and most undersubmitting. Read the full post to learn more about Chien and Grennan’s innovator-inventor gap, how I think of it, and some practical responses here: https://lnkd.in/gF3ZVih2 #intellectualproperty #inventiondisclosure #inventorengagement

Applying AI to the earliest parts of the IP process makes sense because of how much information and communication is required. Read our CEO Alec's latest on what he's seeing around AI for IP creation and what he hopes that means for the IP process as a whole.

Inventions are the bedrock of IP, so why doesn’t the technology companies use to create and manage IP reflect this? In my latest newsletter, I talk about how AI adoption in the industry looks to be centering around the IP lifecycle’s earliest stage, development. This gets me fired up because: - Collecting inventions has always been fraught and patent prosecution notoriously inefficient - There is pressure to protect more innovation with a renewed focus on IP quality - Invention volume is still increasing at an accelerating pace, and - Reductions in IP teams is making throughput a challenge, even as companies look to shift more work from outside counsel to in-house teams I also happen to believe that having deep context around inventions is key to making any IP tech truly effective, which was the topic of my latest blog post. Read both in the links below! 🚨 Episode Archive Alert! 🚨 Why are SEPs — standard essential patents — such a big point of controversy? Last week, IP writer and thinker Florian Mueller weighed in. We thought this would be a great opportunity to resurface a previous episode where we spoke to Qualcomm's chief IP counsel about SEPs, their indispensable role in wireless technology innovation, and the surrounding policy debate. Crafting IP is a holistic process, so IP technology should be holistic too writes our CEO Alec in his latest blog - give it a read!

HR startup Rippling recently raised a $200M Series F at a whopping valuation of $13.5 billion. Why is this relevant to IP? Because Rippling’s approach to business software — building an end-to-end platform — is what I think is best for innovation and IP teams. Even if you disagree, there’s a lot IP can learn from software’s history of going from one-size-fits-all to only doing one thing and then back to being “bundled” again. New tech for IP is becoming more and more available, and the vast majority of it is unbundled. Does this mean IP teams have to repeat history, or can they avoid some of the tech pitfalls the broader business world has already experienced? Read my latest blog post to learn more about why this question matters and what I hope will happen: https://lnkd.in/gcQhJwCV #intellectualproperty #legaltech #IPtech

Honored to be featured in Bain Capital's list of top 50 Vertical SaaS startups. Congratulations to all the innovative companies featured in this year's list who are disrupting and driving real change in their respective markets 🎉

    Principal at Bain Capital Ventures

Today, Bain Capital Ventures and Headline recognize 50 emerging vertical SaaS companies with our second annual Vertical SaaS 50! 🏭 We continue to see founders building in fragmented industries that are heavily document based: Once again, we had strong company representation in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) with the likes of BuildVision, Trayd, Trunk Tools and XBuild, as well as in logistics, with Axle, Boon, Cargado and Pallet. This year, we saw more companies building in professional services with Eve, Garden, and Materia AI, financial services with Rogo and Zocks, and government with Forage and Polimorphic. ✨ Advancements in AI have unsurprisingly unlocked many vertical SaaS capabilities: Companies like Bolo AI offer an AI-powered knowledge platform for oil & gas, MagicSchool AI provides K-12 teachers with a co-pilot and Norm Ai uses AI agents to take care of regulatory compliance. Taylor Brandt and I are excited to hear from you! If you are building a vertical SaaS company or have recommendations for our 2025 list please reach out to us directly.
