About us

Montclair is a suburban township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 37,669. Montclair Township operates under the Optional Municipal Charter Law (OMCL) popularly known as the Faulkner Act. The OMCL provides for several forms of government. In 1980 the Township voted to adopt the “council-manager” plan. In the council-manager plan there is only one directly elected power center: the council. The manager, while chief executive and administrative officer of the municipality, is appointed by the council and can be suspended and removed by a majority vote of the council. The manager’s function is to carry out the will of the council. The council members in the council-manager plan serve a four-year term. The Mayor in the Council-Manager Plan is also considered to be a member of the council and is elected by the voters. The Mayor and council members all serve concurrent terms, with all terms expiring at the same time (except for vacancies). The power and function of the council in the council-manager plan is short and to the point: All powers of the municipality and the determination of all matters of policy shall be vested in the municipal council, except as otherwise provided by this act, or by general law. The council-manager plan is a legislative supremacy, and thus the setting of policy is the responsibility of the council alone.

On October 5, 2023, Officer Scott McGrath went above and beyond the call of duty while off-duty! Traveling with his family in West Orange, he spotted a car causing a traffic jam with its hazards on. Little did he know, this would turn into a life-saving moment. Michelle Moriarty was in distress, screaming for help as her friend James Brown went limp and unresponsive. Without hesitation, Officer McGrath sprung into action! He assessed the situation, initiated CPR, and coordinated with West Orange 911 to ensure swift assistance. After 3-5 minutes of intense efforts, Mr. Brown started breathing again! Officer McGrath's quick thinking and bravery played a crucial role. With the arrival of medics and an ambulance, they used an AED, and Mr. Brown was rushed to the hospital. As of October 8, 2023, we're thrilled to report that Mr. Brown is fully off the respirator, with no brain damage, and has complete feeling in all extremities. 🎉🙏 Officer McGrath's exceptional police work and dedication to duty have not gone unnoticed. Mayor Sean M. Spiller, The Council of Montclair and The Montclair Police Department proudly recognize Officer Scott McGrath for his bravery and selflessness. Let's shower him with appreciation! 🎖️👏 #Hero #OfficerMcGrath #BraveryBeyondDuty #CommunityHeroes #MontclairMagic

Severe Weather Alert New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency for the state, which is planned to go into effect at 5 p.m. Tuesday. A heavy storm is expected to hit our area starting Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday. This storm is expected to bring 1 to 4 inches of heavy rain and wind gusts are expected to reach 40 to 50 mph. We will be monitoring flood areas, especially in the previously affected areas of town. With rivers and streams already at high levels, we expect this to be an issue. Residents may park their vehicles "free-of-charge" in municipal lots and the Midtown Deck (at 292 Glenridge Ave.) from Tuesday 01/09/2024, at 12 P.M. until the rain has cleared. Please note Bay Street, Fullerton, and Crescent Decks are NOT available for free-of-charge parking. We ask that residents plan for and monitor their homes during this period, especially those who park their cars at the Fullerton Deck's lower level. Please consider moving your cars to higher elevation areas. We also ask residents to report street flooding to our non-emergency number, 973-744-1234, or for all other emergencies, call 911.
