Together SC visited the Capitol to Advocate for Nonprofits. In June, our VP & COO, Ben Bullock, and our Director of Public Policy & Community Engagement, GP McLeer, headed to Capitol Hill for the National Council of Nonprofit’s Annual Lobby Day. We asked GP to share his takeaways from his first Hill visit in his new role. Below is an excerpt from his blog. Read the full version here. https://lnkd.in/ep67JsKn Ben and I spent over eight hours on the Hill that day, with our longest break just to eat - I clocked in over 20,000 steps as we went from one end of the Capitol to the other a couple of times. We spoke with our delegation about four primary federal issues: ✅ Charitable Giving Act ✅ Streamlining Federal Grants Act ✅ Nonprofit Workforce Data in BLS Reports ✅ Maintaining Nonpartisanship for Nonprofits Most folks see these Hill visits and wonder if they’re important – do they move the needle? The short answer is – YES. #alliesforgood

Let me start the week with some inspiration from Turn90. It’s a program that has dramatically reduced recidivism in South Carolina by offering employment and life skills training to formerly incarcerated people. Participants are paid a living wage to work at Turn90’s screen printing and embroidery shop. It’s a social enterprise model that fulfills an unmet need and solves a societal problem. July marks a new (fiscal) year for Together SC and the beginning of my tenure as your Board Chair. It truly is an honor to serve! Thankfully, I am joined by Tamela Spann who will serve as Vice Chair and lead the Governance Committee and Monroe Free who will serve as Treasurer and lead the Finance Committee. My life’s mission is to make an impact in every space I enter. For accountability, I’ve set three goals for my work as chair. They are: To recruit and onboard a new CEO who will amplify our current work and provide next-level leadership for our sector; (Special thanks to Paige Stephenson, Immediate Past Chair and now Chair of the CEO Transition Committee, which has already selected a search firm!)
