Market trends from Thursday The Russell 2000, a small-cap index, jumped more than 3% on Thursday. This index has struggled throughout the year, so this surge is noteworthy. Interestingly, every stock in the so-called “Magnificent Seven” fell on the same day. For instance, Nvidia saw a more than 5% decline, and Apple dropped 2.3%. These losses impacted both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. The June consumer price index report, which showed a decline in headline inflation. This boosted confidence that the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates as early as September. Fed Chair Jerome Powell emphasized the need to avoid keeping rates high for too long, considering its impact on the economy. Overall, this shift in market dynamics could signal a healthier and more diversified market, beyond the tech giants. Investors will be closely watching how this trend develops in the coming days. https://lnkd.in/eF29QhXd

Amazon is recognized for its sustainability efforts, including reducing its carbon footprint by 3% last year, ramping up renewable energy purchases, cutting down on pollution from construction, hardware, and equipment, and decreasing single-use plastic by 11.6% across its global operations. Amazon also focuses on reforestation efforts and transitioning to more sustainable packaging solutions. Addressing the climate crisis effectively requires real decarbonization, beyond market solutions like offsets and renewable energy credits. It involves transitioning to direct renewable energy sources, electrifying transportation, and setting ambitious, hard-to-attain goals for reducing climate pollution. Direct renewables significantly combat climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable energy use. Transitioning to direct wind and solar power, as opposed to purchasing offsets or renewable energy credits, offers a more genuine and impactful approach to decarbonization. #Amazon #RenewbleEnergy #Sustainability

I am pushing myself here to start with kudos for Amazon and Kara H. Hurst and her team re the increased use of renewables just published (and publicized) in their sustainability report. I think it is undeniable that what they achieved took a lot to time, money, effort and thought. So - kudos. And - it is equally true that if every company pursued Amazon's strategy we would NOT be close to solving the climate crisis. That's a problem. Much of what Amazon is claiming to be powering their operations with renewables is not actually true. Rather than do the very hard work of eliminating climate pollution by moving trucks to all electric, ships to much lower carbon impact, getting off Amazon's wildly increasing use of air freight (for things that are not urgent at all), and directly powering their company's data farms, factories and offices with renewables they are buying offsets, RECs (renewable energy credits), etc. These so called "market solutions" are a solution for companies wanting to say they are "climate neutral," rather than a solution for our climate. Why? Long story, short: Studies from the likes of Princeton and others demonstrate that offsets, RECs, etc., do little to nothing for reducing climate pollution. But you don't need a fancy study to understand this: If it is way cheaper, easier, and faster to just buy an inexpensive solar credit rather than convert your operations to direct wind/solar power, you have your answer. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. So we need Amazon to go further - and set goals that are hard to attain through real decarbonization. That is what climate champions are doing Jeff Bezos and you have the knowledge, resources and it seems the intention to do it for real. Amazon's own employees are crying foul at the current approach. https://lnkd.in/gSyENfw4

Costco Raises Membership Fees: What You Need to Know Costco, the popular warehouse club, is adjusting its membership fees for the first time in seven years. The annual fee for the basic Gold Star and Business memberships will rise from $60 to $65 starting September 1, 2024. The Executive membership fee will increase from $120 to $130 per year. For Executive members, the maximum annual 2% reward will now be $1,250, up from the previous $1,000. Costco had held off on raising fees due to consumer concerns about inflation. However, the time has come for this adjustment. Membership income is crucial for Costco, allowing them to invest in operations and maintain low prices on goods. Costco’s customer base, which tends to be more affluent, has helped insulate the company from broader sales pullbacks. Like Sam’s Club, Costco is adapting to market trends by adjusting membership fees. Remember, while the cost of membership is changing, the beloved $1.50 hot dog combo remains untouched! #Costco #MembershipFees #RetailNews

It's getting pricier to shop at Costco. Starting in September, the warehouse club said customers will pay $5 more per year for membership in the U.S. and Canada. The price hike was widely anticipated by investors, since the retailer tends to raise its rates roughly every five and a half years. Yet in prior interviews with CNBC, CEO Craig Jelinek had said it wasn't the right time because of consumers dealing with high inflation. Club rival, Walmart-owned Sam's Club, raised its own membership fee in 2022, but that fee is lower than Costco's.

Treasuries dip in light of Powells Tuesday remarks. The 10-year Treasury yield was slightly down at while the 2-year Treasury note yield remained relatively unchanged. The main reason for the down turn ? Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell cautioned against keeping interest rates elevated for too long. Doing so could harm economic growth. Despite recent cooling, Powell emphasized that the economy and labor market remain strong. Investors are closely watching economic indicators like the June consumer price index (CPI) and the producer price index (PPI). The CPI reading is particularly important as it influences market expectations for rate cuts. https://lnkd.in/dtSP2vtH

Pay transparency is crucial in addressing wage gaps. It involves disclosing pay scales for roles and has been shown to reduce disparities, especially along gender and racial lines. Laws and policies promoting pay transparency can significantly contribute to closing these gaps by ensuring fair compensation practices. Pay equity is essential in workplaces as it ensures that employees are compensated fairly for their work, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, age, religion, or other non-job-related factors. This fosters a more inclusive and equitable work environment, drives employee engagement, minimizes turnover, and can enhance an organization's reputation. Implementing pay equity requires a multifaceted approach. It involves understanding that the process can be costly and time-consuming, requires tailored strategies for each organization, and benefits from community support. To foster pay equity conversations, it's vital to educate yourself and your team on the importance and impact of pay equity. A practical step is to engage in learning resources that offer strategies for addressing pay inequities. Addressing unconscious bias starts with awareness and education. On Tuesday, U.S. Treasury yields rose, with the 10-year yield increasing by over 2 basis points to 4.289%, and the 2-year yield reaching 4.628% after rising by more than 1 basis point. Investors eagerly awaited economic data scheduled for the week ahead. The consumer price index (CPI) is due on Thursday, followed by the producer price index (PPI) on Friday. These figures provide insights into inflation trends, which can influence monetary policy decisions. The Federal Reserve has been closely monitoring inflation. Policymakers are cautious about cutting interest rates until they see clear evidence of easing inflation. Currently, CME Group’s FedWatch tool indicates a 77% chance of rate cuts in September, but rates are expected to remain unchanged in the upcoming central bank meeting. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will testify this week before the Senate Banking Committee (Tuesday) and the House Financial Services Committee (Wednesday).
