About us

Tiny Totos Kenya aims to develop a cost-effective and replicable business intervention programme designed to set achievable market standards of service delivery for private slum-based daycares. Through the provision of basic equipment to address safety and learning needs, through training of daycare staff in early childhood education, first aid and business management skills, and by working with parents and local authorities, we pursue a multi-faceted and a collective effort to set standards of daycares in slums. Our approach focuses on businesses and entrepreneurs to avoid dependency. We expect core running costs to remain the responsibility of the daycare managers. We motivate entrepreneurs to engage in a business self-improvement programme and adopt regulatory systems with the opportunity to improve their businesses and earn more money.

Scaling Impact & Change | Consultant & Program Manager (TruePoint Center), Fellow (Higher Ambition Leadership Alliance

Wow, what an incredible Saving Brains workshop earlier this month! It was amazing to see the energy, ideas, and learnings sparked through new connections and collaboration opportunities when we're in-person together. Going beyond "survive and thrive," we focused on how to "transform" and catalyze systems change for early childhood development in East and West Africa. Workshop innovators explored ways to integrate ECD into health systems, as well as strengthen early childhood education systems. In particular, I engaged in close discussions with partners working in Kakuma's education system dedicated to meaningfully center and prioritize refugee- and community-led work in humanitarian and crises settings. I'm grateful I got to reconnect with colleagues and make new friends. Giant Thank You's to our workshop case presenters leading inspiring work in the region: Babies and Mothers Alive, WeAreCohere, Ethiopian School Readiness Initiative (ESRI), Lively Minds, Lutheran World Federation Kenya, Norwegian Refugee Council Kenya, Partners In Health Rwanda, Rwanda Men's Resource Centre (RWAMREC), as well as our brilliant faculty, site visit hosts- Tiny Totos, Touch Health, Jacaranda Health, Ujamaa Africa- and Grand Challenges Canada and Porticus for making these in-depth learning opportunities possible.

Tiny Totos' Ethiopian team ran a workshop for 22 day mothers sourced by our partners at the Bureau of Women, Children and Social Affairs last week. These aspiring, committed childcare providers had been given a taster of our childcare as a business training last month; 18 had since taken concrete steps to provide care to working mothers in their neighbourhoods. With our accredited training programme, they are now equipped with critical core knowledge and skills needed to give quality affordable care, and earn a decent living from their work.

It’s a good thing that the Tiny Totos team gets along because it was a bit of a ‘work on top of each other’ situation at our monthly impact dashboard team review meeting today! Close quarters perfect for engaged brainstorming of correlations between child outcomes, longevity in the network, digital reporting idiosyncracies and zonal differences in our attendance data.

With responsibility for childcare falling disproportionately in the hands of women, we sometimes forget the critical role that fathers and husbands play in giving children healthy, supportive environments to grow up in.  Husbands of women running daycares play a particularly critical role in elevating community standards of care, with their private and public support instrumental in helping childcare businesses to flourish. In order to show the men behind our successful daycare partners how much we value their unwavering support, and to hear their views on how men can be better integrated into improving our community to ensure no man, as well as woman and child, is left behind, the Tiny Totos team organized a Men’s Day this past weekend, attended by over 60 husbands.  Much healthy discussion on beliefs and practices that can support or undermine best childcare practices (as well as some dancing!) ensued, with an enjoyable Tiny Totos’ Men’s Day had by all.  It takes a village – a village including men – to raise a healthy and happy child!

Program Officer, Saving Brains at Grand Challenges Canada

From Uganda, to Kenya! A highlight was spending the day with the remarkable Tiny Totos team! Tiny Totos supports a network of affordable daycares in Kenya and Ethiopia, imbuing a spirit of enterprise and agency amongst daycare providers and parents. We were delighted to meet with Judi, running a daycare in an informal community in Nairobi, describing the range of community services - daycare, afterschool care, tutoring, and healthcare referral - that she provides at her space. A true community asset! Thanks Tiny Totos team for hosting us!
