How does the sun affect our brain? ☀️ We don't have to look directly at the sun to feel the benefits. It sounds weird, but just by being outside, natural light is able to enter through the retina - the thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside that's connected to the brain via the optic nerve. This kickstarts a chain of processes that enables serotonin production, the hormone that controls our mood. Through the retina, sunlight can travel to the pituitary gland (the hormonal hub of the body) and the pineal gland (responsible for the sleep-wake cycle). Sunlight signals to the body to produce the right hormones at the right time, for example: reducing melatonin production (the sleep hormone) when daylight appears, and increasing it during darker evenings. Aside from balancing mood and supporting regular sleep, sunlight also improves libido, supports digestion, regulates metabolism and boosts memory. To switch on your sun power, get outside early in the morning. This sets the body in motion, fueled by natural light to encourage healthy hormone production for all of the body's many processes. The best medicine.
