The official account for Joint Staff news and initiatives of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

About us

The Joint Staff assists the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in accomplishing his responsibilities for: the unified strategic direction of the combatant forces; their operation under unified command; and for their integration into an efficient team of land, naval, and air forces. The "Joint Staff" is composed of approximately equal numbers of officers from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps and Air Force. In practice, the Marines make up about 20 percent of the number allocated to the Navy. Since its establishment in 1947, statute has prohibited the Joint Staff from operating or organizing as an overall armed forces general staff; therefore, the Joint Staff has no executive authority over combatant forces. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) is the highest-ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces and is the principal military advisor to the President, the National Security Council, and the Secretary of Defense. U.S. Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. is the 21st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Joint Chiefs of Staff consist of the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau and the Chief of Space Operations.

Recently, I traveled to Tokyo to participate in the Trilateral Chiefs of Defense Meeting with General YOSHIDA Yoshihide of Japan and Admiral Kim Myung-soo of the Republic of Korea. We focused on advancing trilateral security cooperation and addressing key issues such as DPRK provocations and regional stability. This critical dialogue builds on the agreements made at the Camp David Summit in August 2023, highlighting our unified efforts to bolster trilateral security cooperation on the Korean Peninsula, in the Indo-Pacific region, and beyond. Our continued collaboration not only exemplifies our cohesive approach but also supports our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, paving the way for further progress and dialogue in support of regional peace, stability, and deterrence. https://lnkd.in/d45zE53c

Our military exists to fight and win our Nation’s wars. Ensuring readiness and strengthening our capabilities across domains, Services and the Joint Force is paramount. We train every day to ensure we are so good at what we do that we deter any adversary. We are also focused on better integrating our Allies and partners in our planning and operations by investing in critical programs and capability, expanding security cooperation, and interoperability. These investments in readiness ensure the Joint Force can respond when the Nation calls.

For the past 75 years, NATO has deterred aggression, promoted prosperity, and provided a source of stability for the world. NATO represents more than just 32 like-minded nations… More than just the unified military force of 32 countries. It demonstrates the strength possible when nations with shared values come together focused on achieving a shared vision. Collectively, NATO’s most significant strategic asset is the relationships and collaboration we have with Allies and partners. And to maximize that advantage, we must be truly integrated. We can’t develop our respective national plans and capabilities with Allies and partners as an afterthought. This approach ensures we work seamlessly across domains and nations, and it is how we come together as a combined Allied force. As we reflect on the recent NATO Summit in Washington, I am confident in what has become the strongest and longest alliance the world has ever seen, an alliance for freedom and for peace.

For 159 years, the Medal of Honor has embodied the pinnacle of bravery and sacrifice in defense of our Nation's principles. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Medal of Honor ceremony honoring the legacies of US Army Privates Philip G. Shadrach and George D. Wilson who were posthumously awarded the medal for their valor during the Civil War. Private Shadrach and Private Wilson exemplified the courage that defines our Armed Forces. Part of Andrews’ Raiders, they undertook a daring mission deep into Confederate territory, disrupting enemy supply lines crucial to the war effort. Their actions, risking capture and facing immense danger, reflect the highest traditions of military service. As we commemorate their heroism, let us also reflect on the importance of knowing our history and honoring those who have sacrificed for our freedoms. Their bravery continues to inspire our Joint Force and guide our commitment to upholding the ideals they fought to defend.

LEADERS MUST REACT | As military and civilian leaders, we face high-stakes situations where quick and informed decisions are vital. Our ability to adapt and guide our teams through uncertainty is essential. The OODA loop—Observe, Orient, Decide, Act—helps us stay ahead and manage complex operations. Reactive leadership is not impulsive. It’s about adapting plans as new information comes in. Mission command helps us rely on experience, training, and teamwork to navigate challenges. We need a culture of continuous learning and empowerment at all levels. This makes our Joint Force resilient and adaptive. Improving reactive capabilities is essential for effective leadership in an unpredictable world.

At the recent African Chiefs of Defense Conference hosted by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and Botswana, I emphasized the critical importance of working with our African partners to enhance security, stability, and cooperation in the region. Leveraging our shared insights and perspectives is key to these efforts. Sir Seretse Khama, the Republic of Botswana’s first democratically elected president, once said, "The trouble we now face in the world is caused mainly by the refusal to try and see another man’s point of view.” This wisdom resonates deeply when addressing the complex challenges and opportunities in Africa. As professional militaries, our mission is to promote security and stability—two elements that are fundamental for progress and prosperity in our societies. But no military can tackle all challenges alone, and no nation can succeed in isolation. Success requires cooperation. Our enduring, professional military-to-military relationships with African countries are a testament to the power of partnership. As we look to the future and navigate growing complexities, working together will be even more vital.

I recently met with officers who spent a year participating in the Secretary of Defense Executive Fellows program. This initiative equips our Joint Force with valuable insights from the private sector, enhancing our ability to tackle complex challenges. Bringing private sector experience to the military is crucial for fostering innovation and efficiency. The exchange of ideas and best practices between the military and private sector helps us leverage advanced technologies and formulate strategic approaches. This collaboration is not just beneficial for our Joint Force. By understanding military operations and needs, the private sector can better tailor their solutions and services, leading to more effective partnerships. Together, we can drive progress and ensure that both our military and private sector remain adaptable and forward-thinking in the face of evolving challenges.
