About us
Founded in 1973, the American Brain Tumor Association was the first and only national patient advocacy organization committed to funding brain tumor research and providing support and education programs for people of all tumor types and all ages. The mission of the American Brain Tumor Association is to advance the understanding and treatment of brain tumors with the goals of improving, extending and, ultimately, saving the lives of those impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis. We do this through interactions and engagements with brain tumor patients and their families, collaborations with allied groups and organizations, and the funding of brain tumor research. Today, the ABTA is a catalyst for research-based breakthroughs in the causes, diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, and recognized as the leading resource in patient-centered brain tumor information, education and support.

[REGISTER NOW] I am thrilled to announce that I am the keynote speaker at the 2024 American Brain Tumor Association Conference in Chicago this September. Not only is this a prestigious honor, but it is a karmic homecoming and a return to my roots. Back in 1997, upon showing up at NYU for my 1-year follow-up scans, my father (Mayor Lou) and I noticed there was a conference happening in one of the exhibit areas. It turns out that it was an ABTA conference. So we wandered in, unpromoted and unregistered, and discovered what wound up being the very first time I learned there were support communities of like-minded patients and survivors who understood what I was going through. Brain tumors, whether malignant or benign, are extremely rare percentage-wise against the backdrop of annual cancer diagnoses. According to the ABTA, there are ~90,000 new brain tumor (brain/CNS, malignant/benign) diagnoses annually, with 12,800 in AYAs. Now, here's where it gets fun. I had a medulloblastoma. There are 435 new diagnoses each year and ~6,000 survivors worldwide. Additionally, 70% of all medulloblastomas occur under ten years old. Which means I was 1 of 130 worldwide in 1995. Let that sink in. I am 1 of 130. Now, go register and tell all your friends that this is where all the cool kids will be hanging out— and I will see you in Chicago this September! 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 https://bit.ly/24NCMZ Annette Leslie Gerry McDougall Laura Atwell Emily Lippert Ambreen M.
