Last month, SBN celebrated the longest day of the year with our first-ever Summer Solstice Social on June 20 at the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) Garden in Fishtown! Over 60+ business owners, community members, and area residents kicked off summer with us while savoring delicious fare from #TheHartofCatering, goodies from Philly Foodworks, and enjoyed refreshing drinks from Mural City Cellars pop-up bar, as well as grooved to live music provided by VPS Entertainment! The evening also featured remarks from Vicinity Energy's Chief Sustainability Officer Matt O’ Malley and SBN’s Executive Director, Devi R.. Both Devi and Matt shared the importance of the #triplebottomline business model and supporting local businesses. SBN thanks all our sponsors and members for making this event a huge success!

$7.25—that’s PA’s current minimum wage, which hasn’t changed in 15 years and leaves many struggling to get by. Our commonwealth lags far behind neighboring states like New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and most of the country. We must work together to help raise PA’s minimum wage to a living wage, including the tipped wage, with annual adjustments for cost of living and inflation, to build a stronger, more equitable economy. Last week the inaugural Food Saver Challenge came to a close, and Crust Vegan Bakery was awarded the winner during a closing ceremony! Congratulations to the team at Crust for the incredible efforts they made in reducing food waste Through this challenge, local food businesses both shocked and impressed us with the dedication and thoughtfulness shown in reducing their waste through prevention methods, donation, compost, and working with local Food Saver Challenge Partners.
