Helping law enforcement officers be balanced communicators, in an unbalanced world

About us

Law enforcement officers need to be balanced communicators in an unbalanced world. Every day, with every "routine" interaction, law enforcement officers build or erode public trust with their ability to effectively communicate. Unfortunately, many law enforcement agencies do not concentrate on training and evaluating their officers’ interpersonal skills. Arguably, a more destructive weapon than a police officer’s sidearm, baton, or taser is his or her tongue. Poor and inappropriate communication can create tension and sour community relations regardless of an officer’s technical proficiency. Pre-escalation training is a critical component to helping officers build that essential sense of trust and safety. To set the stage for effective communication, officers should practice crucial VERBAL and NON-VERBAL conversation habits. It is essential for law enforcement agencies to train their staff to be Socially Smart Officers because balanced communications are an essential component of officer safety, effectiveness, and community trust. Designed for law enforcement officers, this highly interactive and engaging program, is an in-person learning experience that helps participants to build communication skills on the three essential components of being a balanced communicator: Attitude, Awareness, and Ability. It is the interplay between these three key components that unlocks the effectiveness of the Socially Smart Officer.

Citizen complaints against police often don’t center on use of force or false arrest, but around discourtesy, language, and how people felt they were treated by officers. I’m honored to be partnering with Dr. Dave Minionis and bringing this to CSC! Be sure to check it out, it could save careers and lives. https://lnkd.in/erU2WMhN

  • We couldn't have said it better ourselves....! "Great class! You guys rock!! Thanks for EVERYTHING! The D & D train is making a difference!! If officers are not growing and developing and becoming better leaders as a result of your class, then it’s simply because they are choosing not to learn. It’s great stuff!! God bless and stay safe, guys!!" *D&D train = Socially Smart facilitators Dan and Dave

What a great experience! Dr. David Minionis and I spent 2 days with representatives from 16 different Virginia law enforcement agencies, discussing the importance of being a "Socially Smart Officer" and understanding "pre-escalation". Officers are proficient in skills such as weapons and self-defense but they need to be just as adept at being a balanced communicator. Pre-escalation training is a critical component to helping officers build that essential sense of trust and safety.

  • Law enforcement, campus police and security agencies must recognize that effective communication is just as important as technical proficiency. Poor or inappropriate communication can strain community relations and compromise officer safety. It's time to shift campus police and security focus towards the critical importance of “pre-escalation training”. Officers must not only excel in the traditional hard skills taught at academies and stressed at in-service training, but they must also develop the ability to communicate tactfully and effectively in any circumstance. The Socially Smart Officer program is designed to assist officers become purposefully balanced communicators and prevent unintended escalations.

  • "Because I want to make a difference." (The most popular response given by applicants when asked why they want to be a law enforcement officer. ) Making a difference occurs in everyday interactions with how we communicate and respond. By bettering ourselves, we make a difference for ourselves and in the lives of others. Being a Socially Smart Officer helps law enforcement officers be balanced communicators in their careers and social lives. #SociallySmartOfficer #Police #LawEnforcement #Sheriff
