Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman was recognized with a 2024 Historic Preservation Award from the City of Las Vegas for his innovative adaptive reuse plan for the 1933 U.S. Federal Courthouse and Post Office — the building that now houses the Museum. Goodman is the founding visionary behind The Mob Museum and a member of the Museum Board of Directors. In 2002, during Goodman’s tenure as mayor, he was able to see through the city’s purchase of the U.S. Post Office and Court House, located at 300 Stewart Avenue, from the federal government for $1. He had tried his first federal case in the building decades prior. The affordable purchase price came with the stipulation that the building would be preserved and used as a cultural center. Then-Mayor Goodman proposed a museum that would explore the complicated history of the Mob, and its mostly hidden role in society. With the support of federal, state and local grants, the building was renovated and became the home of The Mob Museum on February 14, 2012. Former governor and U.S. Senator, Honorable Richard Bryan, who also serves on the Museum's Board of Directors, received an award for his advocacy, specifically for his work in obtaining the rights to the historic name "Helldorado" for the city's traditional Helldorado Days festival that dates back to 1935.
