Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) make up only 3% of U.S. colleges and universities but enroll 10% of all African American college students. HBCUs have educated 70% of the country’s Black doctors, 80% of its Black judges, 40% of the Black engineers and the current U.S. vice president. HBCUs play a vital role in narrowing the income and wealth gap by elevating families from lower-income backgrounds to higher incomes at nearly double the rate of predominantly white institutions. Kresge's support for these institutions dates back to the 1940s and includes more than 60 grants and $75 million. This article details those investments that continue today. https://lnkd.in/ex2P3nNF #HBCUs #highered

Reframe and lead with shared values. Together with partners like Surili Sutaria Patel at Metropolitan Group and Frances Acuña at Go Austin/Vamos Austin, our team at The Kresge Foundation learned ways to approach messaging that can help depolarize the #climatejustice issue and win fresh support from decision makers.

Corp! Magazine's 28th Annual Top Women in Leadership in Business event named The Kresge Foundation's General Counsel and Board Secretary Zenna Elhasan one of the five winners of the “Women In Leadership” award, which honors the contributions of women in Michigan who’ve shown outstanding leadership and helped advance the cause of women in business. The award recognizes, in the words of one recipient, that “women are the heartbeat of the community.” It’s not possible to imagine someone who fits that bill more effectively than Zenna. Congratulations! #philanthropy #leadership

It is impossible to overstate the influence that Board Trustees Jim Bildner and Maria Otero have had on The Kresge Foundation. Jim was the fountainhead for Kresge’s development of a social investments practice, and his early and direct involvement in shaping its purposes, approaches, and aspirations continue to serve as the bedrock for the practice today. His approach was a model of how to bridge between a trustee’s governance role and the fostering of a “product line.” I can’t count the times in which Maria’s pragmatism and knack for cutting to the essence of the matter helped move a Board conversation toward greater clarity. Pretty much every Board meeting I can remember during her tenure was made more productive by her ability to read a room, leaven a conversation with understated humor, inject an unexpected insight, or help crystallize ambiguity. Thank you both for your incredible service and contributions.
