Providing people with the knowledge and experience needed to navigate the complex world of knowledge work since 2017

About us

The Job Hackers is a nonprofit and was founded in October 2017. Our grassroots organization provides free training to increase diversity and inclusion at technology companies. To date, the nonprofit has trained over 3000 unemployed people in Agile, Scrum and modern behavioral theories. As a result, over 41% of participants gain employment mostly as Project Managers, Scrum Masters and Product Owners within 90 days of taking the class. Our mission is to provide individuals with the knowledge and experience needed to navigate the complex world of knowledge work. This is delivered by not only giving our participants valuable knowledge about software development to prepare them for real-world jobs, but by working with them and employers to ensure the proper placement of participants. Monthly Meet-ups are organized bringing past and present students together to hear updates and trends from keynote market leaders. All classes and Meet-ups are held remotely by Zoom or in donated space.

Scrum – The What and Why: Unlocking the Magic of Scrum Part 1 of a 3 part series Introduction 🚀 Transform your team into a powerhouse of productivity and innovation! Discover Scrum—a dynamic framework that drives excellence through collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement. Learn how Scrum’s principles can revolutionize your workflow and deliver outstanding results. 📈 What is Scrum? "Scrum is an agile framework for managing work with an emphasis on software development. 💻 It is designed for teams of ten or fewer members, who break their work into actions that can be completed within timeboxed iterations, called sprints, which are no longer than one month and most commonly two weeks." — Kenneth S. Rubin, Essential Scrum Why Scrum? Think of a Scrum team as a construction crew building a complex structure: Product Owner (PO): The architect 🏛️ who determines what needs to be built and in what order, prioritizing work based on business value to ensure outcomes meet client expectations. 📝 Developers: The builders 👷♀️👷 who deliver tangible increments of value each iteration. 🛠️ Scrum Master (SM): The foreperson 👷♂️ who coaches everybody towards self-organization, helping them to overcome obstacles. 🤝 Barry Overeem emphasizes that Scrum is about creating a learning organization where continuous improvement is embedded into the culture. Empirical Approach and Continuous Improvement Scrum thrives on empiricism, making decisions based on known facts through ongoing iterations and adaptation. 🧠🔍 Iterative cycles enable continuous learning, reflection, and improvement. 📚 This approach ensures that each sprint incrementally builds value, refining the product step by step. Scrum is especially well-suited for cross-functional, self-organizing teams collaborating to create value. 👫👬👭 This can help to further improve value delivery. 📈 Scrum may transform your development approach, increasing productivity, customer satisfaction, and team collaboration. 🤝✨ Kenneth Rubin's "Essential Scrum" emphasizes the importance of Scrum values like Commitment, Courage, Focus, Openness, and Respect, 💪🧠 based on key principles like empiricism, lean thinking, iterative approach, incremental delivery, and self-organization - all of which are essential for a thriving team.🌱🌿 Conclusion for part 1 Scrum encourages collaboration, accelerates delivery, and integrates continuous improvement into the workflow. Scrum, by using lean concepts and other agile approaches such as Kanban and XP, can increase productivity, improve customer happiness, and foster a harmonious team. Ready to improve your team's performance? Embrace Scrum to transform your workflow into a source of efficiency and innovation. 🌟🚀

Mastering Agile Efficiency: The Art of Story Slicing In the fast-paced world of software development, agility isn't just a buzzword—it's a strategic imperative. At the heart of this lies a powerful technique known as story slicing: it’s not about dividing work, but about identifying incremental value and ensuring continuous progress in frequent delivery, i.e.: HOW and WHY work is divided. Let's delve into the intricacies of story slicing, explore techniques, and discuss how it can revolutionize your development approach. Understanding Story Slicing Imagine you're developing a feature-rich application: a traditional approach might involve tackling each feature as a monolithic entity, fraught with risks of delays and misalignment with user expectations. Story slicing flips this paradigm by advocating for breaking down large user stories into smaller, manageable parts. Each slice, though modest in scope, represents a cohesive unit of functionality that can be independently developed, tested, and delivered. Benefits of Story Slicing ● Enhanced Agility and Flexibility: By focusing on smaller slices, teams can respond more swiftly to changes in requirements or market conditions. ● Improved Time-to-Market: Incremental delivery ensures that completed features reach end-users sooner, creating tighter feedback loops and more rapid iterations. ● Risk Mitigation: Addressing complexity in manageable increments reduces the likelihood of major setbacks. ● Stakeholder Satisfaction: Continuous delivery of functional slices enables recipients to see tangible progress and provide timely feedback. Techniques for Effective Story Slicing Various techniques suit different needs: Vertical Slicing: Inspired by Jeff Patton's approach, vertical slicing involves delivering end-to-end functionality across all layers of the application, so each slice provides a complete user experience, integrating frontend, backend, and database components seamlessly. Horizontal Slicing: Ron Jeffries suggests a horizontal division, focusing on specific layers or components (e.g., frontend UI, backend services, data storage). This method allows teams to parallelize development efforts while maintaining a clear focus on functional completeness. Workflow Slicing: As advocated by Humanizing Work, workflow slicing breaks down user stories based on the sequence of actions users perform to achieve a specific outcome, ensuring each slice delivers immediate usability by aligning closely with user workflows. So how do we go about integrating story slicing into our approaches? Consider the following points: ● How could vertical slicing help the team to enhance end-to-end integration and user experience? ● Which aspects of workflow slicing best suit your current needs, and how can they be applied effectively? ● What challenges do you foresee in adopting story slicing, and how can you mitigate them to ensure the full benefits? 🔥Conclusion - see the comments section.

Sign up here https://t.ly/iOrUz. 🎉 Do you find yourself dealing with problems that are never fully resolved? Have you encountered “either/or” choices that were over-simplified with neither extreme neatly fitting the problem? How can we find and stay in balance with managing tensions that simply exist and will never be solved? 👁️🗨️Viewing organizations as living organisms reframes our viewport to focus on relationships. As it turns out, research on relationships (Gottman) indicates that most challenges in relationships are not “problems to solve” but rather ongoing “balances to manage” for optimal benefit. ⚖️These balanced tensions are called “polarities” and they are an integral part of our everyday personal and professional lives already. 🔥By the end of this session, you will be able to: ➡ ️ ️ Discern between “problems to solve” (either/or) and “balances to manage” (both/and). ➡️Become more aware of your frequent interactions with polarities. ➡️Map polarities and identify potential “early warning indicators” to avoid imbalance. ➡️Escape the negative impacts of imbalance while attaining the highest benefit as an individual or in a team setting. 🎉 SPEAKER NOTES: 😍 Christopher Vestal is an Agile Practitioner and Coach focused on helping teams and teams of teams make sense.
