Holden Forests & Gardens connects people with the wonder, beauty, and value of trees and plants.

About us

Holden Forests & Gardens is made up of two of Northeast Ohio’s most important environmental and cultural institutions — the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden — whose mission is to advance and inspire a deeper understanding of plants to enhance life. The 12th largest public garden in the country, Holden Forests & Gardens has more than 17,000 member households and annual attendance of close to 400,000, for whom we strive to provide inspirational and educational visitor experiences. Holden Forests & Gardens is making a positive impact in the region through urban greening and forestry initiatives, environmental research, nature-based educational programs, and world-class visitor experiences at its two campuses. We envision a future in which vibrant green communities and diverse native forests of the Great Lakes region flourish and sustain life.

Stressed out by these uncertain times? Join Dr. Donald A. Rakow on Saturday, June 8, for The Benefits of Nature for All Ages at the Holden Arboretum! Join the discussion on how connecting to the natural world can reduce stress, promote mental health, and lead to positive health outcomes for all ages. Dr. Rakow is a retired associate professor of Horticulture in the School of Integrative Plant Science, Cornell University, and former co-director of the Cornell Graduate Program in Public Garden Leadership. Dr. Rakow is the former coordinator of the Nature Rx@Cornell program, and the co-author of the text, ‘Nature Rx: Improving College-Student Mental Health Cites’ (Cornell University Press, 2019). Dr. Rakow continues to be active in the American Public Gardens Association, for which he has chaired numerous committees. The Association has recognized his contributions to this field with its Service Award (2009) and Award of Merit (2015). This talk will explore some of the major stressors in our modern world as well as recent scientific evidence that confirms that spending time in nature can improve human health. After this talk, you will leave with a new understanding behind the power of nature and motivation for adding nature engagement into their regular routine. Interested? Earlier this week, our President & CEO Ed Moydell met with Representative Shontel Brown and staff from the Office of Representative Max Miller. Ed also met with Senator Sherrod Brown and with staff from the Office of Senator JD Vance. They discussed HF&G’s expanding forestry work – supported by IRA funding – as well as ongoing tree pest and disease research. We are grateful for their support of our work here at Holden Forests & Gardens, and we look forward to welcoming them for visits at both the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Holden Arboretum!

President & CEO, Holden Forests & Gardens

On Tuesday I attended the dedication of the Jesse Owens Olympic Oak Plaza in Rockefeller Park. I was deeply honored to join elected officials including Cleveland City Council President Blaine A. Griffin, Cleveland Councilwoman Stephanie Howse, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, Kate Borders from University Circle Inc., Jeff Verespej from Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, students and teachers from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and members of Jesse Owens’ extended family. Holden Forests & Gardens is grateful to play a role in preserving the important story of Jesse Owens’ legacy. To me, this project is a great example of the power of partnership and the positive impact of HF&G's expertise out in the community.

Welcome to our new President & CEO, Ed Moydell!   It's a perfect late summer day to welcome Ed Moydell to Holden Forests & Gardens. Ed spent the day meeting the team at the Holden Arboretum and ended his tour at the top of the Kalberer Emergent Tower to take in the best view in Northeast Ohio. He'll meet the team at The Cleveland Botanical Garden next!   Ed arrives to Northeast Ohio with more than two decades of experience as a public garden professional and a deep love of plants, trees and people. We could not be more excited to have his expertise, talent and exceptional leadership to further unite the Botanical Garden and Arboretum and elevate the organization into one of the region’s and country’s most valuable assets.   We’re so happy you’re here, Ed! 🌳
