What do those things have in common? They are all handmade luxury goods. They are crafted by artisans who are the best in the world at what they do. Those who can afford these things benefit greatly from a high-quality product. Yet, their very nature— bespoke, expensive, and exclusive— limits their reach, leaving many without access.
I had this conversation with Zachariah Reitano, Co-founder & CEO of Ro on the The Heart of Healthcare Podcast. He said:
"High-quality healthcare right now is a handmade luxury good. The healthcare system is obsessed, and rightfully so, with quality. But they're obsessed with quality and not equally obsessed with scaling that quality. We try to devote more and more hands to scaling it. But when you see the number of people who need care and the number of people who provide it, unfortunately nearly 50% of providers are 55+ and aging out. And the life of providers has dramatically diminished over time with the administrative burden and, burnout, and mental health.
So that supply demand issue is one that is really systemic. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲."
