A group of academics, activists, and UN agency staff are currently conducting a series of activities in the area of social connection for health and well-being. One of these activities is a research priority-setting exercise to establish Grand Challenges in Social Connection. This is a joint initiative between the Department of Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization and the Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection International Scientific Board. Decades of scientific evidence document the importance of social connection for wellbeing, and physical and mental health. However, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted notable gaps in the knowledge and evidence base, especially in applying scientific evidence to alleviate human suffering and efforts to mobilize in crises. Priority setting helps identify gaps in research and evidence, policies, advocacy activities, and resources, ensuring efforts make the best use of limited resources and assists stakeholders with planning, resource mobilization, and allocation. As such, through a global priority-setting exercise, they aim to identify research, policy, advocacy, and funding priorities for improving people's health, well-being, safety, and prosperity worldwide through social connection. Similar to other global grand challenges exercises, they will be focusing on setting priorities for social connection. For this study, they are conducting a Delphi exercise – a structured technique that uses controlled feedback to arrive at a consensus across a diverse group of experts. They are looking for researchers, policy makers, advocates, practitioners, funders, industry professionals, religious leaders and others working in the field of social connection to participate. Participation will involve two online consultations, and completion of two online surveys. They would be grateful if you would agree to participate as a panel member in the project. All of your responses will remain confidential and we will preserve your anonymity in the technical report and paper that will be developed. This study was reviewed by the WHO ethics review committee, and was given ethics exemption. If you are willing to participate, please access the Qualtrics survey below by July 31st. You will be asked to provide informed consent, as well as provide some basic information about yourself. You will then be asked to identify the main challenges in research of global social connection. Survey: https://lnkd.in/gS94pift

Can you think of anything cooler than a camp that combines teens, hip-hop, nature, community and self-expression? 🎤 🌳 I'm excited to shine a spotlight on one of our amazing #YFInnovators, NyRee Clayton-Taylor. Not only is NyRee the founder of Hip-Hop N2 Learning (hhn2l.org), she's also an award-winning educator, named Teacher of the Year for the entire state of Kentucky! NyRee brings so much love to the teens she works with. (And her style!! 🔥 ) In addition to their hip-hop based education during the school year, NyRee and her team are so excited to launch the TRAP (Teaching Respect About our Planet) Camp at the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky for students ages 9-19 on July 21-25. Students will explore nature, write their own hip-hop, and jam with local artists. New beats dropping soon 🎧 When we launched the #LonelyHeartsClubChallenge at Young Futures Org we were dreaming of organizations like HHN2L. Helping young people find community and belonging through a shared passion for hip-hop is a potent antidote to loneliness in the digital age. It's an honor to support you NyRee! Sierra Malia F. ⭐Strategy Spotlight⭐ This week, we’re highlighting how Creating social, educational, and physical programs/activities for school-age youth can boost social connection! The social skills developed by participating in extracurricular activities have been shown to create larger social networks and sources of support. One example can be found in Eureka, Missouri, where The Wyman Center started a Teen Outreach Program to strengthen school-aged youth's social-emotional skills and inspire them to make a difference in their community. In addition to performing better academically and making healthier lifestyle choices, kids who participate in the program also develop an increased sense of belonging and larger social support network of adult mentors. ⭐Strategy Spotlight⭐ This week, we’re highlighting how reforming local zoning codes and policies to allow for shared- or mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods can boost social connection! Evidence suggests that mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods - as opposed to single-use, car-dependent neighborhoods - allow residents to interact more with one another and encourage them to use community spaces more frequently. Residents of walkable neighborhoods are also more likely to know and trust their neighbors as well as participate socially and politically in the community.
