Helping build the spiritual foundation for a loving world.

About us

Our work is about helping build the spiritual foundation for a loving world. The Fetzer Institute was founded by American broadcast pioneer John E. Fetzer (1901–1991), who had a keen interest in the relationship between the inner life of spirit and the outer life of service. He established the Institute with the belief that efforts to address the world’s critical issues must go beyond political, social and economic, strategies to address the psychological and spiritual roots of these issues.

Was the Internet originally a force for good? Was its promise hijacked in its infancy? Is the Internet salvageable at this point? In the latest episode of the #SoulBoom podcast, #RainnWilson interviewed American writer and columnist #DouglasRushkoff. Douglas was a witness to the earliest days of the #WorldWideWeb. His online experience even predates #AskJeeves and #Friendster. He watched the Internet morph from a military network to a unique force to connect humanity. He also watched it deteriorate as it shifted to an attention economy driven by profit and engagement. From psychedelic origins to the launch of WIRED Magazine, Douglas shared insights into how the Internet was lost and how it still contains an enduring potential for human connection and spiritual growth …if we can reclaim it. Fetzer Institute is a proud sponsor of the Soul Boom podcast.

Power is a corrupting force. Did you know that the root of the word “corruption” is the Latin word corrumpere? It means “to destroy” or “to spoil.” In a recent episode of the #HarryPotterandtheSacredText podcast, Vanessa Zoltan and Matt Potts explored the theme of corruption in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 3, “Will and Won’t.” The discussion wound its way through Kreacher’s fate, the new members of leadership at the Ministry of Magic, and Dumbledore’s mysterious errand as he picks up Harry from his spell-preserved home at Number Twelve Privet Drive. As they went along, the co-hosts considered how corruption can cause decay at organizational levels. They touched on key topics, from institutional weaknesses to the line between systemic failure and abuse. Fetzer Institute is a proud sponsor of the Harry Potter and the Sacred Text podcast.

There is a spiritual hunger behind humanity’s endless search for knowledge and information. This search for a “meaningful spirituality” was the focus of a recent publication by #FetzerInstitute’s Senior Program Officer Mohammed Hamid Mohammed. Mohammed Mohammed provided thought-provoking answers in an interview titled “Claiming a Role in the Search for a Meaningful Spirituality.” The article was published in the Summer 2024 issue of The Occasional Papers of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Mohammed spoke to the concept of living in an “abstract world” and the “virtual bubble” separating the spiritual and the material and keeping countless humans from the Divine, nature, and one another. He also addressed the spiritual search behind our endless hunger for knowledge and information and the incompletion, frustration, and hunger that come with a lack of acknowledging the spiritual drive behind so much of what we do. From clarifying subtle yet critical elements, such as naming versus defining the spiritual, to considering the last 5,000 years of religious history, this is one you don’t want to miss. Can you criticize America and still be part of its culture? Can you use comedy as a bridge between cultures? Is innovation politically polarizing? In the latest episode of the #SoulBoom podcast, #RainnWilson talked to fellow comedian Ronny Chieng. The Malaysian-born actor has forged his name amongst the Hollywood elite through performances including “The Daily Show,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” and #Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” In their conversation, Rainn and Ronny dove into the complexities of maintaining individual cultures in a rapidly globalizing world. They explored this critically important topic through witty conversation and mighty guffaws, interspersed with the cross-cultural experiences and insights that Ronny has personally encountered on his journey of self-discovery. What does it mean to act with honor? On June 27th, the Harry Potter and the Sacred Text podcast kicked off again after a brief inter-book hiatus. As the show nears the end of its second trip through J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series, hosts Vanessa and Casper began Book 6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with an episode focused on the theme of honor as seen throughout Chapter 1. The dynamic duo took a look at the relationship between honor and shame as they considered the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, who replaced the errant and outgoing Cornelius Fudge after half a decade in office. From references to A Very Potter Musical to commentary about the quirky encounters of the New York City transit system, this is a fun trip through the first chapter of the series’ penultimate novel.
