We made this "explainer" video to help viewers understand the work that went into our reporting at Scripps News about the Maine mass shooting in October 2023. We filed several record requests to try to understand how the shooter was able kill 18 people when there were so many documented warning signs ahead of the shooting. “We had to look at something completely innovative and new and, yes, painful, but with the idea that we would continue to support the journalism at a local level that has been in our DNA for years,” Kate O'Brian, president of News at Scripps, told TVNewsCheck.   One year into Scripps’ news initiative, O’Brian and other Scripps leaders discussed the shift inside Scripps’ newsrooms, rebuilding trust with viewers and its commitment to sustainable local journalism.   Learn more from TVNewsCheck: https://lnkd.in/gWT6S-fM

Innovative News leader. Teacher. Community Servant.

While getting closer to her home city of Atlanta was the goal - it’s safe to say that Alyssa “A.J” Douglas has gained so much more by making the move to South Georgia 🍑 ON THE ROAD today where my Neighborhood News reporter tour took me to the city of BAINBRIDGE 🚘 What I love most with our Neighborhood News model is having some reporters who live in the cities they report from 🏠 The day kicked off at The Bean Cafe in the heart of downtown. While the coffee was good the conversation was great. Here’s my AJ ALL ACCESS: ➡️ She didn’t immediately head to college after high school. AJ spent a few years working, before deciding to follow through on her passion for journalism. ➡️ She credits the time she spent in customer service for her ability to be able to connect with people in her neighborhood. Something else that really stood out to me was the extra care she puts into making sure people see that she is approachable and truly one of their neighbors. ➡️ When it comes to what she likes the most about her neighborhood, it is the community of support she’s gained since moving there. Listening to AJ talk about her friends she’s found in Bainbridge warms the heart - knowing she has developed a community of her own. Special Shoutout to AJ for taking me on an actual tour of her neighborhood 🚙 Loved being able to not only hear about places there, but to see them on my own ❤️
