While in a meeting, David Poghen, general foreman, Eastern Utility services, and his team heard a loud boom caused by a car accident. All 23 employees ran outside to check on those involved in the accident, including a disoriented woman who fell to the ground. This summer, U.S. Residential/Commercial offices are implementing a new program designed to strengthen their safety culture and reduce incidents through recognition of employees who perform activities that prevent accidents. The new R/C services incentive program, Safer Through Achievements and Recognition, or STAR, aims to encourage the kinds of behaviors that happen constantly throughout the day in every office where employees make decisions that keep themselves and their teammates safe. Meet Karen Wise. Karen is vice president, Environmental Consulting, Davey Resource Group (DRG). Karen started with Davey in 1997; much has changed over the past 27 years. She attributes that to legislation, educational campaigns, the good work of key non-profits, and celebrities de-stigmatizing being gay. "All of that has trickled down into our workplace at Davey and made coming out, or being an ally to the LGBTQIAP+ community, a very safe and normalized thing," Karen said. "Davey has always been an innovative leader in tree care and environmental science, and the fact that it has supported and embraced our LGBTQIAP+ Employee Affinity Group (EAG) demonstrates its leadership in honoring the diversity of its employees, and by doing so has made the company, and all of us, stronger and better because of it." We asked Karen why the LGBTQIAP+ EAG here at Davey is important to her. She said: "As a participant in the LGBTQIAP+ EAG, I recognize that we all stand on the shoulders of, and owe a huge debt of gratitude to, those trailblazers who paved the way to what we now enjoy. Our task is to continue the work of honoring people in all their uniqueness, celebrating diversity, and pursuing justice and equity for those who still feel marginalized."

The Davey SEED (Science, Employee Education & Development) Campus keeps getting more and more exciting as the structures start to take their form. Barn Update: The timber framing has been erected and all the timbers are in place. This is exciting because the event space can be built around it. The barn timbers, dating back to approximately 1880, were dismantled from a barn that stood on the Davey SEED Campus site near the front of the property. We are living Davey's stewardship value by repurposing these historic timbers. Main Building Update: Two-thirds of the building is enclosed. Interior walls are being framed and electrical and plumbing are being roughed in. All the steel for the building is in place. The roof and siding have been installed on the portion which houses the climbing gym and labs. We can't wait for the Davey SEED Campus to open in 2025. Visit Davey.com/seed for more information.

The Kaulig Companies Championship and Davey have teamed up for an impactful community initiative to help make Northeast Ohio greener. Through the “Birdies ‘Fore’ Trees” program, the two Northeast Ohio-based organizations have pledged to plant a tree for every birdie made by a PGA TOUR Champions professional on Firestone Country Club's signature 16th hole during the 2024 Kaulig Companies Championship from July 11-14. The Kaulig Companies Championship team, Davey employees, as well as community leaders, will gather in the coming months for the inaugural tree-planting event.
