OK, the weekends here. As I do from time to time, I'm sliding in a story that might evoke a "Hey, that's interesting." reaction from LinkedIn followers. Nope, not a story about working life, or the economy, or the prospects and challenges of AI. It's a story about hope. And progress. It's a story about my home town - Boston - and the home base of where I work: The Christian Science Monitor. Boston has seen ups and downs in its crime rate over the decades, especially the murder rate. One of our young reporters, Troy Aidan Sambajon, noted a big drop in the murder rate: Homicides down 82%, according to Boston Police – the biggest drop of any major city in the U.S. and shooting incidents down 44%. So Troy wanted had the obvious question: WHY? In our weekly audio feature and podcast, "Why We Wrote This," he talks about what he discovered and how he discovered it. You can find his original story here. https://bit.ly/4clWdG7 And listen to our interview with Troy here: https://bit.ly/3L2mqxt or find our "Why We Wrote This" podcast on your favorite podcast platform. #crime #police #trendingtopics

Two writer/editors began an exchange at a recent staff meeting that felt like the makings of a podcast. So I asked Amelia Newcomb, our managing editor, to moderate a conversation. Like other episodes of “Why We Wrote This,” it’s about how we view (and do) our work at The Christian Science Monitor. Master class in a pretty different kind of #journalism. With Whitney Eulich and Ryan Brown. Produced by Mackenzie Farkus.

Earlier this year, #Boston's plummeting murder rate stunned the city of nearly 5 million. There have only been six murders in Boston so far, a 76% reduction compared to the same period in 2023. However, #rebuilding #trust within community-police relations remains an aspirational goal. “Those memories of police brutality, that’s passed down from generation to generation,” says Monalisa Smith, president and founder of Mothers for Justice & Equality. “Those realities are still there for our young people, especially our young men.” That means the “unflinching #trust in the police might not be there,” she says. “But in some ways, it feels like we can finally have a seat at the table.” Today’s drop in #crime likely has many factors, including a higher-than-average homicide solve rate and an increase in anonymous tips. However, these also point to the importance of the community ties that have been built up over decades. Read my story from earlier this May about Boston's plummeting murder rate. #police #RebuildingTrust

Amid threats of wider regional war, one tough question faces mediators: How can talks continue if one side kills the main negotiator for the other side? An Arab diplomat who requested anonymity confirms to the Monitor that talks are “essentially suspended” as of Wednesday evening and that relations between Arab mediators and Israel have been “severely strained” by #Haniyeh's killing. Adds the diplomat: The assassination “shattered the trust between #Hamas and the mediators and between the mediators and #Israel.” https://lnkd.in/dH29W2rZ

We know people feel really overwhelmed by news, and that’s causing people to avoid news coverage altogether. But what can journalists do when there is, indeed, so much news happening all the time that needs to be covered? 💡 Here’s an idea to steal from The Christian Science Monitor. The Monitor gives readers this option for a “Quick Read” or “Deep Read”. And the quick read is *actually* quick – just six paragraphs, making it a whole lot more accessible to people who only want to spend a few minutes a day catching up on the news. More on how journalists can adjust their products for news avoiders here. >> https://lnkd.in/g46JmBDq

Can climate-warming methane be remoooved? Researchers estimate that cows are responsible for around 30% of U.S. methane emissions. The Christian Science Monitor's Stephanie Hanes explains state-of-the-art research led by CALS professor Joseph W. McFadden exploring solutions for reducing methane - one of the world’s most powerful greenhouse gases – emitted from cows.

A few months ago I took a trip to Adagom, a small community just a few KM from where the first gunshot in Nigeria's 30 months civil war was heard. My purpose was to chronicle how this remarkable place has extended a warm embrace to thousands of Cameroonian refugees fleeing the conflicts in their homeland. This is my latest for The Christian Science Monitor #refugees #community
Why a Nigerian village has welcomed thousands of refugees
