OK, the weekends here. As I do from time to time, I'm sliding in a story that might evoke a "Hey, that's interesting." reaction from LinkedIn followers. Nope, not a story about working life, or the economy, or the prospects and challenges of AI. It's a story about hope. And progress. It's a story about my home town - Boston - and the home base of where I work: The Christian Science Monitor. Boston has seen ups and downs in its crime rate over the decades, especially the murder rate. One of our young reporters, Troy Aidan Sambajon, noted a big drop in the murder rate: Homicides down 82%, according to Boston Police – the biggest drop of any major city in the U.S. and shooting incidents down 44%. So Troy wanted had the obvious question: WHY? In our weekly audio feature and podcast, "Why We Wrote This," he talks about what he discovered and how he discovered it. You can find his original story here. https://bit.ly/4clWdG7 And listen to our interview with Troy here: https://bit.ly/3L2mqxt or find our "Why We Wrote This" podcast on your favorite podcast platform. #crime #police #trendingtopics

I’ve talked to over 100 members of the Venezuelan diaspora. Most of them didn’t want to leave, didn’t want to lose their home. And they certainly didn’t want this government. Some examples of Venezuelan resistance from afar for The Christian Science Monitor today: https://lnkd.in/gCCXPVk8 #venezuela #elections #diaspora #migrants

Incredible piece by Simon Montlake in the The Christian Science Monitor on the gloriously messy work of preventing targeted violence. Proud of my Urban Rural Action colleagues. Go Pennsylvania team and Uniters!

Long-term, lasting solutions to urban #HeatIslands begin with community trust-building. Jingnan Peng wrote about the effort being made in Louisville, Kentucky, for The Christian Science Monitor, then joined our podcast to talk about it. #heat
A tree canopy can help cool an urban heat island. But residents need to buy in first. And some cities have failed to win trust by failing to deliver. For this week’s podcast on how we do our work at The Christian Science Monitor, we mic’d up our senior show producer, Jingnan Peng, to talk about a story he wrote about about trust and tree-planting. #trees https://lnkd.in/ee9VnYh6
Why greening a city meant first winning over its jaded residents

Are we facing the perfect storm for home insurance? Last year was the worst for underwriters since 2011, and the industry as a whole has been in the red for half of the last 20 years. In California, historic wildfires in 2017 and 2018 wiped out a decade of insurance industry profits. Already this year, wildfires have burned over 200,000 acres – more than five times the five-year average for this date. A blistering week is making conditions worse. Meanwhile the cost to replace or rebuild a home has been pounded by inflation. The Christian Science Monitor's reporting team of Ali Martin & Laurent Belsie are examining the impact for homeowners as trying to find insurance is proving harder, especially in California and other states hit by extreme weather. What are homeowners’ options and long-term solutions? Read on here: bit.ly/3xVlAQg #insurance #disasters #hurricanes #wildfires #trendingtopics
