We were so happy to be joined today by New York State Assemblyman Bill Conrad for NYS Assembly today where he announced $53,000 in state funding he secured recently for the Buffalo Zoo. The grant will support the Zoo’s education and animal departments, including its animal upkeep and husbandry program. Entrance fees fund much of the Zoo’s operations, so in times of reduced attendance, such as during the pandemic or extended bouts of inclement weather, supplemental funding sources prove vital. State support like Conrad’s helps the Zoo retain programs, care for animals, and remain affordable for visitors. Conrad also helped pass the 2023-2024 New York State budget, which committed more than $50 million in general funding and capital support statewide to our communities’ “living museums,” including zoos, botanical gardens and aquaria (ZBGA). Assemblyman Bill Conrad said, “Buffalo is home to so many treasured institutions of historical and cultural significance, and our Buffalo Zoo stands tall among them. The memories made here span generations, and its function as an inviting centerpiece of Buffalo’s landscape, and its role in regional, statewide, national, and international tourism can’t be overstated. “I am thrilled to be able to offer this support to the Zoo, to ensure it has the resources it needs to continue innovating in the fields of zoology and conservation education. Indeed, the Zoo doesn’t simply house and showcase animals; it allows the living wonders of our planet to serve as stewards for the environment. Under the new leadership of President/CEO Lisa Smith, there are truly exciting plans unfolding at the Zoo, and I join our community in eager anticipation of its future development and loyal support of its enduring mission.” Buffalo Zoo President/CEO Lisa S. Smith said, “The Zoo depends on self-generated revenue (ticket sales, rides, etc.) to pay for about 80% of our expenses. Since the pandemic, expenses are out-pacing revenue and with lower than usual attendance this year, this operational funding comes at an opportune time. This funding will help the Zoo maintain our animal operations including support to improving husbandry, food, enrichment programs, and veterinary care as well as allowing us to continue to connect people to nature through our education initiatives. We are so grateful for the Assemblyman’s and the State’s assistance at this time." See insights and ads Boost post Like Comment Share
