📅 This Day in Disability History: On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. This law helps ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Today, we still have many people waiting for our services. Your support—whether through volunteering, advocating, or donations—can help us serve more people and reduce our waitlist. Tap the link in our bio or below to learn how you can help. Your support makes a big difference! https://lnkd.in/gjnEXd3Q #ADA #DisabilityRights #TheArcSF Image Description: A group of people from The Arc SF holding signs in front of the Capitol building in Sacramento.

🌟 Celebrating Disability Pride Month with The Arc San Francisco! 🌟 Isolation is a major issue for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, often leading to loneliness and mental distress. When COVID-19 hit, The Arc SF quickly created an online Hub to keep our community connected. Since June 2020, our regular Zoom classes have provided a lifeline, reducing isolation and promoting mental and physical health. Our Zoom classes, ranging from ASL to karaoke, help bridge this gap, offering a sense of community and support. As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we reflect on our resilience and the power of connection. Together, we can create a more inclusive and connected world. 💙 A big thank you to Julia Métraux, Bay City News, and SFGATE for highlighting our work and supporting our mission. #DisabilityPrideMonth #TheArcSF #InclusionMatters #StayConnected #CommunitySupport https://conta.cc/3WnoKpj

Over time, the words ‘retardation’ and ‘retarded’ became hurtful and mean. Our organization changed its name to ‘The Arc’ to use respectful language that people with disabilities prefer. Now, we use terms like ‘intellectual disability’ and ‘developmental disability’ instead. We work hard to make sure everyone uses these terms. Join us in spreading respect and understanding. Share this post and help us educate others! #Respect #TheArc #DisabilityRights #IDD #WordsMatter #TheArcSF Image One: has text that reads "Words matter, changing with the times," and all the name changes The Arc has gone through: 1953 – 1973: National Association for Retarded Children (NARC) 1973 – 1981: National Association for Retarded Citizens (NARC) 1981 – 1992: Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States (ARC) 1992 – Present: The Arc of the United States (The Arc) Image two is a newspaper clipping on a wooden table showing The Arc's old name.

Even though The Arc San Francisco is not a regional center anymore, we still work hard to support and empower our community. Let's continue our mission to help people with I/DD. Thank you to Bay City News for highlighting our innovative online Hub in their recent story! During COVID-19, The Arc San Francisco quickly adapted to combat isolation and loneliness among our clients. This initiative, offering regular Zoom classes since June 2020, has been a lifeline. Eyan Gilder, a 25-year-old East Bay resident, shares how these classes have become a vital part of his routine, providing both learning and a sense of community. https://lnkd.in/g8W3-DhQ #DisabilityPrideMonth #CommunitySupport #OnlineCommunity #TheArcSF #InclusionMatters #StayConnected #ZoomClasses #DevelopmentalDisabilities #SocialSupport

On this day in 2015, the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, marking a monumental victory for the LGBTQ+ community. This landmark ruling also profoundly impacts LGBTQ+ individuals with disabilities, providing essential legal protections and recognition. At The Arc San Francisco, we celebrate and stand with all facets of our community, recognizing that true equality must encompass all identities. #DisabilityPride #PrideMonth #LGBTQ+ #Intersectionality #TheArcSF Image description: 6 boxes within the image featuring rainbow flags and digital images of participants and staff of The Arc SF at past pride events and a dance at The Arc.

The Arc San Francisco and Visa Partner to Help Increase Financial Literacy for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Community   June 20, 2024 – The Arc San Francisco and Visa are excited to announce their partnership on phase one of a new initiative, which officially started in April 2024, aiming to increase financial inclusion among individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD)   The Arc San Francisco is using our resources and connections to ensure that each participating client receives the personalized support they need. With Visa's generous first grant of $100,000 for phase one, we're leading an initiative to create a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of their abilities.   Recently, The Arc San Francisco conducted its first focus group with clients to assess the accessibility and help ensure the effectiveness of Visa’s financial literacy initiative, Practical Money Skills, for the I/DD community. Based on focus group feedback, and with Visa's support, we're adapting resources to better meet the needs of the I/DD community, and to ensure financial literacy content is readily accessible to them. Our ultimate goal is to achieve true financial inclusion by providing support and training to financial institutions, service providers, and interested stakeholders to understand the nuanced support needed in the I/DD community to allow the program to scale globally.   There is an acute need to broaden financial inclusion efforts for I/DD. In 2021, the rate of working-age households with disabilities lacking bank accounts rose sharply to 14.8 percent, compared to only a 3.7 percent increase for households without disabilities that lack banking accounts. This means that three million individuals with disabilities don't have bank accounts, facing significant obstacles to financial inclusion.   Visa and The Arc San Francisco will collaborate on a plan to share findings and observations from the assessment. We will share study results, practical tips, and more resources to help individuals with I/DD confidently manage their finances.   Our partnership reflects our shared values and dedication to making a real difference in the lives of individuals with I/DD. Together, we're excited to drive positive change and promote financial inclusion for all.
