TFAH’s new report, Pain in the Nation 2024: the Epidemic of Alcohol, Drug, and Suicide Deaths, notes that while alcohol-related deaths were down in 2022 the multidecade trend of alcohol, drug, and suicide deaths remain alarmingly high. The positive news that alcohol deaths were down by six percent was offset by no reductions in deaths due to drug overdose or suicide and the fact that the combined rate of such deaths since 2002 is up 142 percent. These data highlight the importance of investing in prevention programs and the community conditions that promote health. In addition, harm reduction strategies should be in place in every community, and we need to grow and diversify the mental health workforce. The report finds: · Drug overdose rates are highest among American Indian/Alaska Native people, adults ages 35 to 54, Black people, and males. · Alcohol-induced deaths are highest among American Indian/Alaska Native people and adults ages 55 to 74. · Suicide deaths are highest among American Indian/Alaska Native people, males, and people living in rural areas. There are evidence-based solutions such as the 988 Lifeline, but they require implementation in every community and sustained funding. Among the report’s recommendations are trauma informed youth services including mental health services in every school and the easy availability of naloxone in every community. TFAH’s new policy brief outlines the important role public health should play in multisector programs to manage the impacts of global warming. The brief, Building Resilience: How Recent Federal Policy is Laying the Groundwork for Improved Climate Adaptation, analyzes three federal actions: the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Justice40 Initiative and details how these programs are supporting climate adaptation efforts at the state, tribal, and local levels. It discusses the value of comprehensive climate adaptation approaches and the importance of public health agencies being at the table during climate adaptation programs planning. Public health’s experience in data analysis, program planning, and health equity, plus its grounding in community relationships, make it a critical partner in any climate adaptation programming. https://lnkd.in/etRn7juA
