Welcome back to our Passport through Texas series! Our third stop brings us to Public Health Region (PHR) 7 Central Texas 🤠 PHRs are the local presence of DSHS and work in communities to serve the public health needs of Texas. PHRs help screen Texans for diseases and connect them to needed services. PHRs also provide medical responses during public health and weather emergencies. PHR 7 comprises 25,830 square miles, or 16.5 million acres. Within the region, 23 counties do not have health departments. Regional staff step in to assist residents in those counties to find the care, treatment, and resources they need. PHR 7 works closely with communities so they can safely accommodate visitors from around the world. Sanitarians in Regional Consumer Protection work closely with food handlers at the Texas Renaissance Festival every year to make sure those turkey legs and other tasty treats are highlights, not spoilers, for the 500,000-plus wistful time travelers. The region also teams up with neighboring PHR 8 South Texas each year to provide flu shots for lawmakers at the Texas State Capitol. Continue to follow along as we share more facts about out PHRs and public health in Texas. #texas #publichealth

Welcome back to our Passport through Texas series! Our second installment takes us to Public Health Region (PHR) 9/10 in West Texas 🤠 PHRs are the local presence of DSHS and work in communities to serve the public health needs of Texas. PHRs help screen Texans for diseases and connect them to needed services. PHRs also provide medical responses during public health and weather emergencies. West Texas is home to the largest Mexico border area in Texas, spanning from El Paso to Terrell County. An estimated 40 million people per year cross from Mexico to work, shop, vacation, and get their health care needs met. One uncommon, but important, part of meeting these public health care needs is limiting radiation exposure. DSHS does this through effective licensing, registration, inspection, enforcement, and emergency response. In West Texas – and across the state – our inspectors do the important work of making sure these facilities are safe and compliant. Follow us as we will continue sharing more facts about our PHRs and public health in Texas. #publichealth #texas

🌀 When #HurricaneBeryl hit, DSHS was there every step of the way. We activated 90 DSHS emergency response staff to facilitate patient evacuations and support medical sheltering. Hundreds of additional public health responders continue to work around the clock to ensure the health care systems and patients are supported as Texas communities in Beryl's wake recover. #texas #publichealth #emergencyresponse #emergency
