The President’s Leadership Award began in 1985 with an endowment from Frank Denius, LLB ’49, Life Member, a past president of the Texas Exes and legendary Longhorn. This year, the Alcalde recognizes three seniors, two juniors, and a sophomore for demonstrating selflessness, excellence, and passion on campus—and inspiring these qualities in others. Read about this year's recipients in the Alcalde.

In 1957, five boys from San Felipe High School won the high school men's golf state championship, but they would be given their trophy unceremoniously. Fifty-one years later, a fellow San Felipe graduate, writer, and then-amateur golfer Humberto Garcia, BA ’75, JD ’78, Life Member, stumbled upon the largely forgotten history at a 2008 golf tournament for a high school class reunion. Garcia knew this was a story he had to write. He couldn’t have known that his book, Mustang Miracle, would one day be made into a movie starring Dennis Quaid, and that his hometown and his five new friends—Joe Treviño, Lupe Felan, Mario Lomas, Felipe Romero, and Higinio “Gene” Vasquez —would be catapulted into the spotlight. Read more about the group and upcoming movie in the Alcalde.

You know how the saying goes: “Work hard, play hard.” Few other schools exemplify this ethos like The University of Texas at Austin. As much as there is to do on the Forty Acres—from life-saving research to world-class scholarship—UT students have always known how to have a good time when not in class, treating Austin as an extension of our beloved campus. In honor of the summer holidays, the Alcalde looked through decades of Cactus yearbooks to see how Longhorns used to spend their leisure time.

UT men’s swimming and diving coach Eddie Reese retired in March after 46 years, during which time his Longhorns won 15 NCAA championships, with 13 second-place finishes and 45 consecutive conference titles. But if there was anyone in the world who could succeed Reese, it’s Bob Bowman, who served as a Team USA assistant in 2012 and head coach in 2016 as well as was a personal coach to Michael Phelps. At UT, he will also be taking on the newly created title of director of swimming and diving, which means he’ll work closely with women’s coach Carol Capitani and diving coach Matt Scoggin. Read Bowman's interview with the Alcalde.
