  • Mark your calendar for January 1, 2025: That’s when changes will go into effect and Texas’ Vehicle Safety Program will eliminate most vehicle safety inspections. Drivers in emissions counties will still need emissions tests to register their vehicles. Non-commercial vehicles will be subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, which you’ll pay when you register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New vehicles that haven’t previously been registered will be required to pay an initial inspection program replacement fee of $16.75 to cover two years. The best way to prepare is to know when your vehicle is up for registration. If it falls before January 1, 2025, the current rules still apply; if it falls after, you will be subject to the changes. • You may be asking, are commercial vehicles being impacted by the changes to the state’s Vehicle Safety Inspection Program?   Here’s what you need to know: All commercial vehicles in all counties will still be required to obtain a passing vehicle safety inspection. Because they will be required to pay for that safety inspection, commercial vehicles will be exempt from the inspection program replacement fee.   Read more about the changes at https://bit.ly/3L779LV.
