On Connecting Awesome People this week, we welcome back the always energizing Marcus Carter II. Marcus and Paul dig deep on the group agreement (and occasional workplace mantra) "Assume Good Intention." While this agreement seems benign, we discuss the many ways that it can perpetuate harm in the name of protecting those who do harm. It's always good to be in conversation with Marcus, and this week will give you plenty to think about! Meet this month's employee spotlight, Jacob Grandstaff! ⭐ Take a moment to learn a little more about him below. 👇 Q: How long have you been with Cinder? A: About 7 and a half years now. I started originally as a seasonal coverage temp doing validation testing with the WiFi team at Intel. My superiors liked my work enough to assist me in perusing more permanent employment with the company. A few validation assignments latter I found myself slotting in nicely as a lab technician for where I have been for the bulk of my employment. Q: What does your job entail? A: Short version: All of the background work required to keep the teams functioning and meeting deadlines. Test Bed Setup, Inventory management, BKC and BKM database curation, as well as some limited technical validation. Q: What is your favorite part of working at Cinder? A: The work is constantly evolving. Due in part to my specific position, there is ALWAYS something to do. New software is constantly being added to weekly BKCs, hardware configurations are consistently being released or improved on, new systems are always coming in, and all of it need to be checked, documented and made available for use in test. Leadership at Cinder is approachable and open to dialogue. In my experience, from my team leads on up, leadership here has always been willing to listen and consider views and opinions coming from the ground level. Q: What's the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career? A: Plunge head first into processes and activities that you do not know. Become comfortable being out of your comfort zone. Learn that obscure thing that nobody else on your team wants to do. Your professional focus will always be your focus and by virtue of your training and experience will naturally be honed and refined, but spending time in the periphery, the penumbra of your stable qualifications, you will round your experiences and fortify yourself with new skills. Q: What’s one thing on your bucket list? A: One day I want to hike through Yosemite National Park but I have a long way on my personal health journey before I can do something like that. Q: Do you have any fun/interesting facts you’d like to share? A: The progenitor of contemporary tabletop wargames like Warhammer 40K, Bolt Action, and Battletech, is generally attributed to the 1803 Rule Book: Little Wars by the Author H.G. Wells, who himself was an anti-war pacifist.
