Cleanliness is crucial to the operation of #OxygenSystems. Learn more about the safety and design of these systems from Swagelok global technical lead, Matt Dixon.
Have you ever wondered why cleanliness is so important in #oxygen systems? It has to do with the fact that oxygen makes other materials more flammable, including system contamination such as cutting oils, chips, particulate, construction debris, and even the oils from our fingers. As I explained in my post last week (Link in Comments) about the #FireTriangle, this contamination becomes fuel in a fire. Unfortunately, this type of contamination is relatively easy to ignite in an oxygen system. Once ignited, it acts as kindling and the energy released may be enough to catch surrounding materials on fire, possibly even the metallic fluid system components such as tubing/piping, valves, fittings, etc. Therefore, it is important to use components that are cleaned for oxygen service and then maintain that cleanliness throughout the assembly process.
