About us
Support For People With Oral And Head And Neck Cancer (SPOHNC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness & meeting the needs of oral & head & neck cancer patients through its resources & publications. SPOHNC was founded by oral cancer survivor, Nancy Leupold in 1991, when few resources existed for this patient population. SPOHNC offers programs & services for oral, head & neck cancer patients, caregivers, survivors & friends. The Outreach Program includes 120+ CHAPTER SUPPORT GROUPS throughout the U.S, a National Survivor Volunteer Network match program which matches patients with survivors, according to diagnosis & treatment, a monthly newsletter & additional resources at www.spohnc.org. In 2015, SPOHNC launched the Second Edition of We Have Walked In Your Shoes A Guide for Living With Oral and Head and Neck Cancer, for newly diagnosed patients & those going through treatment. This resource contains the basics about the symptoms & diagnosis of head & neck cancer, types of treatment & common side effects. It also offers a section to list your healthcare team, a personal calendar & journal, diet & nutrition information & a resource list. Many have enjoyed Eat Well Stay Nourished, A Recipe and Resource Guide for Coping with Eating Challenges. Volume 2 of this book provides support & encouragement to those with eating challenges. Both books contain recipes submitted by survivors & family members, information about swallowing problems & nutrition, cancer journeys of survivors & “Tips from the Pros”. Volume 2 has a chapter related to “Fortifying Ingredients for Weight Gain”. SPOHNC's Second Edition of Meeting The Challenges Of Oral And Head And Neck Cancer, A Guide For Survivors And Caregivers, updates the first edition & brings 5 new chapters of information, including a chapter addressing psychosocial issues. A “must read” for survivors, caregivers & healthcare professionals involved in the care of oral, head & neck cancer patients.

Dedicated to championing the well-being of individuals affected by oral, head, and neck cancer. We aim to bridge the gap between medical and oral dental treatments through awareness, education, and support initiatives.
Unfortunately, dental plans typically limit coverage to around $2,000. For head and neck cancer survivors who have endured radiation therapy, dental treatments can far exceed these plan limits. Dental care is a long-term issue that significantly impacts survivors' overall health. To address this gap, it is crucial to implement more community screenings and advocate for Medicare to cover oral/mouth screenings comprehensively. We applaud Medicare for expanding coverage for certain dental procedures, and we encourage it to continue to do so. Effectively catching oral cancer at its early stages will not only improve patient outcomes but also lower long-term medical costs associated with treating this terrible disease. MOPSS is actively advocating for insurers in Massachusetts to cover medically related dental treatments, and we hope that all states will follow suit in ensuring adequate care for cancer survivors.
In 2021, 31% of #Medicare beneficiaries living in the community had an #oralcancer screening. White non-Hispanic beneficiaries were most likely to have an oral/mouth cancer screening (36%) compared with Black non-Hispanic and Hispanic beneficiaries (12% and 15%, respectively). Medicare beneficiaries with dental coverage through a private plan were more likely to have an oral/mouth cancer screening compared with beneficiaries who had other types of dental coverage or no dental coverage. #OralHealth #HealthEquity #OralCancerAwareness #Medicare #PublicHealth #CancerMoonshot #OralCancer Source: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Enterprise Data and Analytics (OEDA) Oral Cancer Screening Among Medicare Beneficiaries Living in the Community https://lnkd.in/ekSHHDpC

Thank you, Dr. Ryan Lee, for highlighting this crucial issue— 🌟“Health Care is Dental Care”, 🌟 and for working with our organizations to continue advocating for Oral, Head and Neck Cancer patients and survivors. The gap in dental coverage is a serious oversight that affects many patients and survivors' quality of life and long-term health. At SPOHNC, we are committed to raising awareness about the urgent need for comprehensive insurance coverage for head and neck cancer survivors. Together, we can make a difference. 🫶🏽 #HealthcareAdvocacy #CancerAwareness
Consider the concept of "breast insurance." Imagine a breast cancer survivor discovering that health insurance doesn't cover their needed breast reconstruction after mastectomy. "Sorry, that's a breast procedure, and that code isn't a billable code through your health insurance policy." "Maybe call your breast insurance carrier to check if you have coverage?" _______ Fortunately, since 1998, federal regulation (Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act) has mandated this coverage. All cancer survivors who underwent mastectomy also have insurance coverage for reconstructive surgery. _______ Now, consider changing the word "breast" to "teeth." Do oral cancer survivors who have reconstructive dental needs have coverage through medical insurance? The answer is a resounding NO. Head/neck cancer survivors face significant challenges post-treatment, with dental issues often overlooked. The lifelong effects of radiation and chemo can lead to severe side effects many years later, yet NEITHER medical insurance NOR dental insurance provides adequate coverage. Support organizations like Support For People With Oral And Head And Neck Cancer (SPOHNC) and MA Oncology Patients, Survivors and Supporters (MOPSS) play a crucial role in bringing awareness to this critical deficiency. The tireless advocates that work for such groups nationwide, often volunteers without pay, help shed light on the gaps in coverage for post-cancer oral health issues, emphasizing the importance of bridging the divide between medical and dental insurance for holistic cancer care.
