Self-stigma is the beliefs our patients have about themselves regarding their disorder. It may come from the stigma they have heard from others, from viewpoints they’ve seen online, or from various other places. In a recent study, researchers aimed to look at the connection between self-stigma and alcohol use disorder severity. They found that people who had higher levels of stigma experienced more severe alcohol use disorder symptoms. To reduce all types of stigma in our community, it is crucial to use person-first language, such as “a person with an alcohol use disorder.” Spreading awareness and stories about those recovering from this condition can, over time, lower stigma. When someone has an alcohol use disorder, their time is often consumed by it. After they have completed treatment and are on the path to a healthier life, they might find they have more free time. This can make it more challenging to maintain their recovery, as free time can lead to boredom and wandering minds. Here are some summer hobbies to suggest to fill that time: - Flower arranging - Birdbath decorating - Paper collage making - Gardening - Composting - Fishing - Pottery
