About us

Founded in 1987, Studio E Architects is a San Diego- based design collaborative led by principals Eric Naslund, John Sheehan, Mathilda Bialk and Maxine Ward. Practicing throughout the Southwestern United States, the firm’s varied portfolio—housing, mixed-use, civic, institutional, and urban planning projects—has been recognized with numerous design awards, including three National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects. The firm’s projects have appeared in national and international design journals and publications. The work of Studio E Architects recognizes that the meaning and utility of architecture is grounded in the specificity of context. Unique site conditions inspire solutions that connect people to the places they inhabit. This focus on both physical and cultural context produces architecture that is responsive to the natural environment, embraces everyday phenomena and rituals, and expresses a richer understanding of place. Studio E Architects provides outstanding service to public agencies, institutional clients, non-profit organizations, private developers and individuals. The firm’s efforts have been rewarded with a strong repeat client base. Recent projects include mixed-use developments, charter schools, university housing and administrative services and numerous multifamily housing developments throughout California. Much of the firm’s success can be traced to its commitment to a participatory approach to problem solving. Studio E works to build consensus among stakeholder groups ensuring creative solutions that are embraced by the community while satisfying the goals of the sponsors.

Moving on up! The Nash brings smart and stylish density to Park Blvd, an important corridor within San Diego, connecting the urban neighborhoods of University Heights, North Park, and Hillcrest. The seven-story building houses 190 units, most of which are micro-units under 500 square feet, that live large with in-unit laundry, walk-in closets, a modern kitchen, and a full or juliette balcony with oversized sliding glass doors. The U-shaped building encloses a west-facing courtyard featuring a pool, spa, cabanas, game room, multi-level gym, and provides many of the units with views over Park Blvd and the neighborhood beyond. We are thrilled to welcome Takara Tada onboard as a Senior Project Manager. Takara grew up in Hawaii and started her career in New York City. With the M.Arch / M.U.D Dual Degree from the University of Michigan and a D. Arch Degree from the University of Hawaii, she embraced the transition into working life in a fast-paced city. Her adventures continued to San Francisco where she gained a decade of experience in mixed-use, multifamily residential projects. Now that she’s landed in sunny San Diego, she is ready to bring her expertise to our team. We couldn’t be more excited to have her with us! Outside of the office, you can find Takara with her dog at the beach or in the mountains or spending time with her favorite human – her niece.

Dirt was flying last week as we celebrated the groundbreaking of Congregational Suites – a new 56-unit affordable housing project in Chula Vista, CA. Developed by Community Congregational Development Corporation and Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF), the building will anchor the gateway corner at E Street and Third. Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, a representative from Assemblyman David Alvarez’s office, Council member Jose Preciado, Stuart Hartman the CEO and President of RHF were among the attendees along with Brian Woods the Director of Housing Partnerships at San Ysidro Health. The 7-story building includes resident recreation rooms and on-site property management and counseling offices. San Ysidro Health will run a neighborhood Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) clinic at the street level open to both residents and drop-ins. Perfectly located to take advantage of Chula Vista’s walkable historic core – seniors will benefit from nearby shopping, city services, parks and the central library. Residents will enjoy a large beautifully landscaped rooftop garden replete with an exercise lawn, seating areas, bar-b-que terrace and raised vegetable beds. The development is designed to a LEED Gold level of sustainability and includes a significant array of rooftop solar panels. Photos courtesy of Consolidated Contracting
