Commissioning Anniversary of USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123) The Aegis destroyer USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123) is one of the U.S. Navy’s newest destroyers. She was commissioned just one year ago on May 13, 2023, and formally entered the fleet during a ceremony in Key West, Florida. The ship’s namesake Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee, who entered the U.S. Navy in 1908, one of the first women and first nurses in the Navy. She quickly became the second Superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps and served as Superintendent from 1911 to 1922 during World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic. The role of Navy nurses expanded under Higbee’s leadership and included Navy nurses serving in infectious disease wards during the 1918 influenza pandemic. Her service and leadership was so superior and she was awarded the Navy Cross, the first woman to be so recognized. Lenah Higbee also has the amazing distinction of being the namesake of not one, but two, ships – the Gearing-class destroyer USS Higbee (DDR-806) launched on November 13th, 1944 and the first to be named after a woman servicemember of the U.S. Navy … and the USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123). The motto of USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee is “She is a Warrior”, and reflects the ship’s indomitable spirit, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity. And her motto speaks to the formidable capabilities of this Aegis destroyer and her advanced Aegis weapon system, known world-wide for its reliability and effectiveness. #DDG123 #USSHigbee #Navy #USNavy #CommissioningAnniversary #StrategicInsight

Commissioning Anniversary of USS Anzio (CG 68) – now Decommissioned Today, May 2nd, is the commissioning anniversary of the Aegis cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68). While USS Anzio (CG 68) has been decommissioned, there are still so many that served on her that it is important to still recognize her commissioning anniversary and honor her service in the U.S. Navy. She was commissioned on May 2nd, 1992. An Aegis cruiser, USS Anzio was commissioned in Pascagoula, Mississippi, back in 1992. She is named for the Battle of Anzio in Italy from World War II, about 100 miles north of Italy in January 1944. While the amphibious landing of two army divisions – one U.S. and one British – went smoothly, the Nazi Germans quickly responded with forces from northern Italy and, at one point, had up to 12 divisions committed to isolating and holding the Allied forces. Tying up these forces in Italy proved important once the Allied landings at Normandy began, according to the U.S. Army’s “The Ordnance Department: On Beachhead and Battlefront.” And the battle got hot during a major Nazi offensive in February: “At the peak of the attack, for every shell the enemy artillery fired, VI Corps threw back from ten to twenty. The artillerymen of one of the Long Tom batteries, veterans of Tunisia, Sicily, and the Salerno-Cassino operation, told Ernie Pyle that they had fired more rounds "sitting there in one spot on the Anzio beachhead" than they had in the entire year preceding, and that another battery had fired more in four hours one night than in the previous eight months.” (p.199, The Ordnance Department: On Beachhead and Battlefront) All of which inspired USS Anzio’s motto, “Stand and Fight,” a resounding call to action that embodies the indomitable spirit and determination of its crew in the face of adversity and directly harkens back to the Battle of Anzio. Throughout its distinguished service, USS Anzio has epitomized this motto, standing ready to defend our nation’s interests with unwavering resolve. And, naturally, USS Anzio could truly “Stand and Fight” since it was an Aegis cruiser, outfitted with a state-of-the-art Aegis weapon system, renowned for its warfighting capabilities, reliability and effectiveness. On September 22nd, 2022, Anzio was decommissioned at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia after 30 years of service. Follow us, Strategic Insight, Ltd., on LinkedIn! Commissioning Anniversary of USS Truxtun (DDG 103) On this day, April 12, 2024, we proudly celebrate the 15th anniversary of the commissioning of the Aegis destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103), a magnificent Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. USS Truxtun is named after Commodore Thomas Truxtun, an American naval officer during the Revolutionary War and a hero of the Quasi-War with France and the Barbary Wars.  USS Truxtun was commissioned in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 25, 2009. As a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, Truxtun adds two helicopter hangers to host the MH060 Armed Helo to its air defense capability, extending Truxtun’s sensor coverage and battlespace.  Commodore Thomas Truxtun's bravery and leadership continue to inspire the crew of Truxtun. In 1798, he was one of the original six captains appointed by President Washington. During the Quasi-War with France, Truxtun commanded the USS Constellation – one of the original Six Frigates – and achieved a significant victory against the French frigate L'Insurgente in 1799 and La Vengeance in 1800. He also commanded the USS President, the last of the Six Frigates to be built. His success in battle and his unwavering commitment to his country set an example for all who serve on the ship that bears his name. The ship's motto, "Pursue, Attack, Vanquish” reflects the spirit and determination of its crew, who stand ready to face any challenge with courage and skill, operating the Aegis Combat System. The USS Truxtun’s Aegis Combat System is widely recognized as the most advanced and capable maritime weapon system in the world. This cutting-edge technology enables the ship and its crew to defend against a wide range of threats, ensuring the safety and security of our nation and our allies. Happy 15th anniversary to the USS Truxtun and her crew! #USSTruxtun #DDG103 #Aegis #ArleighBurkeClass #AegisCombatSystem #USNavy #PursueAttackVanquish #CommodoreThomasTruxtun
