During the month of July, we honor and celebrate the diversity, strength, and contributions of individuals with disabilities. The Disability Pride flag designed by Ann Magill contains a black background to symbolize protest and victims of ableism and five color stripes to represent invisible or undiagnosed disabilities, physical disabilities, neurodivergence, psychiatric disabilities, and sensory disabilities. The parallel, diagonal lines represent solidarity with the disabled community and breaking through barriers. This month, and every month, we support an inclusive and accessible environment for our employees with disabilities and the work they do to advance our mission to make the world safer place together.

Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Black Independence Day, marks the anniversary of when news of emancipation reached enslaved persons in Galveston, Texas in 1865. While the Emancipation Proclamation freed these enslaved populations in Texas in 1863, word of their freedom took more than two years to reach some communities. Common celebrations include readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional hymns like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and reading the works of prominent Black authors. In 2021, the United States formally recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

We celebrate Pride Month in June to recognize the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer identifying (LGBTQ+) people. Pride began after the Stonewall riots in 1969 in New York City, an incident that spurred the gay liberation movement and the fight for many LGBTQ+ rights throughout the twentieth century through today. Common symbols of Pride are the rainbow or pride flag. Pride is usually marked with large celebrations, parades, and marches throughout the month. On the day of the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, June 28, we celebrate LGBT Pride Day. At STR, we proudly celebrate and support people of underrepresented genders and sexualities.

Memorial Day is a day dedicated to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. Yesterday, STR hosted a memorial service for friends and family who have given their lives for our freedom. While the day is meant to be reflective of their sacrifice, this time and this past weekend is also about celebrating those freedoms and way of life enshrined in our Nation’s Constitution. It gives their sacrifice that much greater meaning.
