Vanessa Coffman, PhD, Director of The Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness, has recently been featured in a New York Times article discussing dangerous Salmonella infections from raw milk consumption. She highlights the issue of inadequate communication about food recalls, stating that it's a failure on multiple fronts when consumers don't hear about them. One notable case mentioned is Raw Farm, linked to a multistate outbreak of E. coli in raw Cheddar cheese earlier this year. In 2023 alone, they had recalls for Salmonella in raw Cheddar cheese and Campylobacter in raw milk. Despite known risks, social media endorsements continue, spreading misinformation and undermining public health efforts. Let's work together to stay informed and prioritize food safety! When Pam’s pregnancy was abruptly interrupted by a severe case of listeriosis, her family's life was forever changed. This harrowing experience, caused by a contaminated turkey sandwich, propelled Pam into the fight against foodborne illness and led her to Stop Foodborne Illness (STOP). Inspired by stories like Pam and Louise’s, STOP is dedicated to preventing foodborne illness through advocacy, education, and support. Founded by parents who lost children to foodborne pathogens, we work to strengthen food safety policies and practices, ensuring that tragedies like Pam and Louise's can be prevented. Your support can help us continue this vital mission. Together, we can make our food supply safer and protect families from the devastating effects of foodborne illness. Despite repeated health warnings, raw milk sales are soaring, especially with the bird flu spreading among dairy cows. This dangerous trend calls for urgent action and greater awareness. Since the confirmation of bird flu in U.S. cattle, weekly raw cow’s milk sales have jumped by 21% to a whopping 65% compared to last year, reports NielsenIQ. This surge in consumption defies expert advice, emphasizing the urgent need for regulations and public education. Despite known risks, social media endorsements continue, spreading misinformation and undermining public health efforts. Raw milk can contain harmful germs, and the recent outbreak has shown high levels of bird flu virus in infected cows' raw milk, posing a serious health threat. Stop Foodborne Illness will continue to prioritize informed choices and advocating for policies promoting pasteurized milk consumption to combat misinformation and protect our communities' health.
