🎙️New from the Buildings + Beyond podcast... 🔸Career Diaries – What’s It Like Working as an Accessibility Consultant?🔸 🎧 WHERE TO LISTEN Online: https://lnkd.in/eExy2jTA Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/enFExt_V Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eFfi5DTB Accessibility consultants work at the intersection of architecture and social justice. It’s much more than checking the boxes on accessibility requirements of laws and codes; it takes precision, dedication, and creativity to solve problems and remove physical barriers to access that have historically marginalized people with disabilities. To mark the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July, we invited three members of SWA's Accessibility team on the podcast to talk about their unique career paths and the important work they do. Thank you to our guests Carlos Caballero S.A., Jeffrey R. Heitert, and Jennifer Low—who, combined, have almost 40 years of experience! 🙌 And thank you to our host Kelly Westby! 👏 #Accessibility #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #ADA #AccessibleDesign #AccessibleBuildings

We love to see Massachusetts at No. 1 on the RESNET Honor Roll of States! 🏆👏 In Massachusetts, 98% of new homes were Home Energy Rating System (HERS®) Index Rated in 2023 (compared to 73% in No. 2 state Arizona). However, this comes as no surprise... Under new energy codes adopted across the state, all new residential and commercial construction (and some renovations and additions) are required to have a HERS score showing a certain level of energy efficiency. The highest score that new homes can earn is 52 (down from 55 in 2022). 📉 In communities that have adopted the most stringent Specialized Code, the HERS score limit is even lower and dependent on climate zone and use of fossil fuels. Check out this map from the State of Massachusetts showing the adoption of various energy codes across the state: https://lnkd.in/dmCQf7bS [PDF] Massachusetts sets a great example for how states can reduce operational carbon emissions from new and newly renovated buildings. Several municipalities are working to address embodied carbon emissions from building materials as well. In need of a registered HERS Rater for your next residential project? When the Winthrop Center project began, the largest #PassiveHouse building in the world was 270,000 square feet. Scaling up the Passive House standard for Winthrop Center, at more than 800,000 square feet and located in Boston's cold climate, was a big task. This video from Suffolk Construction gives an overview of how the team achieved this sky-high goal. Hear from leaders on the project team, including SWA's Lois B. Arena, PE. Amazing work from MP Boston, Handel Architects, Suffolk Construction, DeSimone Consulting Engineering, WSP, and the SWA team! 👏👏👏
Suffolk Northeast is thrilled to share that our Winthrop Center project was recently awarded a 2024 CMAA New England Mark H. Hasso Project Achievement Award! Winthrop Center stands apart in its category due to its innovative design and impressive scale. It is the largest office building in the world built to stringent Passive House standards, a highly energy-efficient building standard that also promotes indoor comfort. Due to the project’s unique design, Boston saw its first-ever “sky mat,” a horizontal concrete slab meant to alleviate structural stress by evenly supporting and transferring weight downward throughout a building. This project is a striking addition to the Boston skyline and redefines what is possible in sustainable construction. Thank you to our partners at MP Boston, Handel Architects, DeSimone Consulting Engineering, WSP and Steven Winter Associates for helping us transform this visionary concept into reality!

Congratulations 👏👏👏 to all the winners of the Built Environment Plus and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Embodied Carbon Reduction Challenge! Together, the 16 projects in the challenge reduced embodied carbon emissions by a total of ~25K metric tons—the same as the carbon sequestered in 410K+ tree seedlings grown for 10 years. 🌳 We loved learning about the cost-effective and replicable strategies from each project team. A special congrats to our team of sustainability consultants who earned a runner-up prize for their submission, Building 7 of Northland Newton Development in Newton, MA: Shari Rauls, Alex Guerrieri, M.Sci, (spot them in the group photo!) The Atrium at Sumner designed by Studio Libeskind is now open in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn! 🎀✂️ Built on an underutilized section of the Sumner Houses campus, the building adds nearly 200 affordable apartments to the development that are reserved for low-income seniors and those who formerly experienced homelessness. Among its many features, the Atrium offers vibrant, inclusive spaces designed to enhance the quality of life of its senior residents—and it is projected to use up to 70% less energy than the average New York apartment. Congratulations to the entire project team, including Studio Libeskind, Urban Builders Group, Ltd, RiseBoro Community Partnership, Selfhelp Community Services, and Lettire Construction Corp. 🙌 SWA is proud to be the building enclosure consultant for the Atrium at Sumner! 🧐 Learn more: Studio Libeskind case study https://lnkd.in/eZ5t-iwA The Architect's Newspaper coverage https://lnkd.in/e7M3avrf #AffordableHousing #SeniorHousing #SustainableHousing #BuildingEnclosures
