About us

Working Harder to Keep You Healthier! St. Luke’s Hospital is an independent, critical access hospital owned by our community in Polk County, NC. We’re a small nonprofit hospital that is working harder to keep our community healthier. Using the healthcare industry’s best practices, St. Luke’s provides a plethora of services from high-quality emergency, acute medical/surgical, and diagnostic testing. We are rapidly moving toward achieving our goal of becoming the model for critical access hospitals in the southeast. To that end and through much hard work, St. Luke’s has earned 5-Stars for patient experience. There are 6,146 hospitals in the United States. And we are one of only 266 hospitals nationwide to receive this distinction.

    THE PROMISE OF MOLECULAR PROFILING & IMMUNOTHERAPY For those who have been diagnosed with cancer, you know the shock and fear that runs through your soul. Thousands of people hear those words every day. We're here to tell you that while there are no bright sides to a cancer diagnosis, there is hope. At St. Luke's, we've strongly embraced preventative strategies, molecular profiling through genetic, genomic, and germline testing, and the promise offered through immunotherapy. Dr. Stephenson, Director of St. Luke's Cancer and Infusion Center, said, "Every day, we learn more about how and when to manipulate the human immune system. The key is the timing of therapy and knowing when to re-engage the body's immune system." To create profile panels, we test nearly every St. Luke's Cancer & Infusion Center patient for molecular drivers. The importance of molecular diagnostics is the roadmap for treatment it provides. Molecular diagnostics dictate how aggressively we treat. The St. Luke's difference is we now personalize our therapies to address the considerable variants in each patient's environment, genetics, and habits to deliver individualized precision medicine.     Stephanie Postol, Chief Nursing Officer at St. Luke's Hospital, recently graduated from the Rural Health Association's "Rural Hospital CNO Certification Program." Alex Bell, St. Luke's CEO Interim, said, "We are proud of Stephanie's hard work and dedication at St. Luke's. Her leadership at the hospital is exemplary and is one reason St. Luke's is thriving in an environment where so many hospitals are struggling." One in three rural hospitals is "at risk" of closing. According to Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association, "Leadership is the biggest predictor of rural hospital success." The obstacles healthcare providers and patients face in rural areas like Polk County are tremendously different than in urban areas, and we understand the importance of Stephanie's continuing education in addressing these challenges. Mr. Bell added, "We as a community are incredibly fortunate to have a nurse leader like Stephanie, who is making a tremendous impact on healthcare in Polk County. I am proud of her accomplishment and am pleased to share the news of her graduation from this prestigious certification program." Stephanie's success is a testament to the support and investment of our community. We sincerely thank Nick Galvez, Rural Hospital Manager from the NC Office of Rural Health. Through Nick's efforts, Stephanie received a state grant to fully sponsor her for participating in this essential program, a clear demonstration of our collective commitment to the future of healthcare in our rural areas!     Bringing World-Class to Our Operating Rooms Dr. John Hutto is a general invasive cardiologist who profoundly understands the heart's electrical system, which follows a common pathway in your heart and is responsible for an orderly and efficient rhythm. He began implanting cardiac devices with great success thirty years ago and is now implanting pacemakers at St. Luke's. The "Sustaining Surgical Excellence" campaign is a critical initiative seeking $1 million to equip St. Luke's Hospital and Dr. Hutto with essential tools, ensuring our rural community has access to timely and efficient lifesaving and life-improving surgeries.
