World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe. It shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of those forced to flee. Spring Institute is closed on June 19 in recognition of the #Juneteenth holiday, which celebrates the emancipation of African Americans who had been enslaved in the United States. On this day in 1865 (following the end of the American Civil War), news of emancipation belatedly reached the southern city of Galveston Bay, Texas. With a long history of community commemoration, Juneteenth was finally designated a federal holiday through the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act of 2021 and was established as a state legal holiday in Colorado through enactment of Senate Bill 22-139.
