From the Collections #AtTheMuseums: Twenty Dollar Bill by John Haberle Trompe l’oeil still life paintings, intended to “fool the eye” with their illusions of reality, became popular in America after the Civil War. American artist John Haberle stands out as one of the most accomplished painters in this specialized style. Haberle was one of a group of artists referred to as “money painters,” who emerged during the late 19th century in response to the economic and social concerns the country was facing. By using United States currency as their subject matter, the artists expressed their opinions about the great personal fortunes being made and the country’s obsession with the rich and famous. #CollectionsAtTheMuseums #Painting #StillLife #Art #SpringfieldMuseums #WesternMass #Highlight Twenty Dollar Bill (1890), oil on canvas by John Haberle (American, 1856-1933). Gift of Charles T. and Emilie Shean, 39.10.

Happy 4th of July! A reminder that the Museums are CLOSED today but the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden is open for strolling. #DidYouKnow Currier & Ives published several prints commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence? While other compositions picture the numerous men who signed the document, this scene portrays the authors: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. A detailed inscription provides a history of the declaration’s origins to its acceptance on July 4, 1776. This print was published in 1876. #AtTheMuseums #FourthOfJuly #SpringfieldMuseums The Declaration Committee (1876), hand-colored lithograph by Currier & Ives (American, 1834-1907). Gift of Lenore B. and Sidney A. Alpert supplemented with Museum Acquisitions Funds, 2004.D03.727. Not on view.

From the Collections #AtTheMuseums: Bust of Edouard Colbert by Antoine Coysevox Born in Lyon, France in 1640, and son of a sculptor, Antoine Coysevox grew to be a sculptor as well, engaging with the Baroque and Louis XIV styles of art. His skill won him favor with nobility and the royal family, for whom he designed tombs with effigies and portrait busts. In 1666, his favor with the royal family paid off as he gained the title of “Sculptor to the King,” the king at this time being Louis XIV (1638-1715). Coysevox’s portraits could express both the psychological depth of the person depicted and the importance of their social status. Featured in this white marble bust, Edouard Colbert, Marquis de Villacerf was the Minister of War for Louis XIII and a senior official in Louis XIV’s government. The stern gaze and restrained facial expression noted in Coysevox’s bust serve to signify Colbert’s high social standing and extreme intellect. #CollectionsAtTheMuseums #Sculpture #Art #SpringfieldMuseums #WesternMass #Highlight Bust of Edouard Colbert, Marquis de Villacerf (around 1690-1700), white marble made by Antoine Coysevox (French, 1640-1720).
