This bird’s eye view of Mangroves on tidal flats in Kakadu, Australia caught the eye of judges in the 10th Mangrove Photography Awards. Mangrove forests grow along creek lines on the tidal flats of Kakadu national park. Mangroves are a significant ecosystem in Kakadu’s coastal zone, which is only accessible by boat or air. The mangroves not only provide coastal protection but are also rich in biodiversity and an important resource for Aboriginal people. The shot was taken from a helicopter flying over Australia’s Northern Territory by award-winning photographer, Mr. Stuart Chape, who is also the Director of the Island and Ocean Ecosystems programme of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme and received a highly commended award in the 10th Mangrove Photography Awards, hosted by the Mangrove Action Project. The winners were announced on #WorldMangroveDay and the awarded entries can be viewed at https://lnkd.in/gNRSsq7b... We at #SPREP would like to say a big "Congratulations" to Mr. Chape! He has shared his gift of photography with SPREP and our Pacific through the SPREP Annual Report each year, as well as images to grace the walls of the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilions at the UNFCCC COP’s to showcase our Pacific to those who have yet to visit our region. • Spotlight on work to encourage behaviour change towards waste management Whether it is dealing with disposable diapers in Vanuatu, improving waste management in Solomon Islands or changing mindsets about how to dispose e-waste at the Ensisi Valley in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the work of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to encourage behavioural change towards waste management in Pacific communities was highlighted in Funafuti #Tuvalu today. The opportunity to do this came during the one-day Pacific – European Union (EU) Waste Management Programme (PacWastePlus) Behaviour Change Showcase and workshop at the Funafuti National Conference Centre. It was designed to highlight current waste management behaviour change projects PacWastePlus is undertaking, and to encourage similar projects in other Pacific communities. Representatives from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and #Vanuatu, reflected on what they found exciting about their behaviour change project, how the communities have responded and some of the key lessons that could be applied to similar contexts in other Pacific communities. • What is ‘Dmakeiukl’ in #Palau? Dmakeiukl refers to the four states on the west coast of Palau: Ngardmau, Ngeremlengui, Ngatpang and Aimeliik. Under the EU/SPREP Pacific Bioscapes Programme, rangers from each state are to receive training in essential planning, awareness, organisation, and community engagement techniques. In Ngeremlengui, a recent community meeting organised by the Protected Areas Network (PAN) rangers was attended by over 100 community members. They heard about the progress of the Ngardmau mangrove and ngduul efforts, the Ngeremlengui clam farm project, the Ngatpang cheremrum restoration project and the Aimeliik ngduul restoration project. #BioScapes #pacific #biodiversity #conservation #rangers #ecosystems #PacificBiodiversity #CleanPacific European Union in the Pacific

  • In Tuvalu, the Pacific – European Union (EU) Waste Management Programme (PacWastePlus) hosted a Behaviour Change Showcase workshop to highlight the current behaviour change projects SPREP is undertaking in waste management in the Pacific. Pilot projects in Vanuatu dealing with disposable nappies, Solomon Islands in improving waste management practises and Papua New Guinea on e-waste were spotlighted. Representatives from these countries reflected on what they had found exciting about their behaviour change project, how the communities have responded and some of the key lessons that could be applied to similar contexts in other Pacific communities. The workshop precedes PacWastePlus’s Steering Committee Meeting later this week, and the 4th Clean Pacific Roundtable also scheduled to be held in Funafuti next week. The Pacific – European Union (EU) Waste Management Programme, PacWastePlus, is a 72-month programme funded by the European Union in the Pacific and implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP to sustainably and cost-effectively improve regional management of waste and pollution. #CleanPacific #ResilientPacific #pacwasteplus #behaviourchange #Tuvalu
